Who, exactly, does the RIAA comprise of? Which labels? I'm going to have to do some research, I guess.

Officially, it's a trade organization to which labels belong.

Label membership list is at http://riaa.com/About-Members-1.cfm

Pastor Benjamin and I have a plan to get a Record Association for private labels that will allow webcasters to broadcast their content on a % of profits basis instead of a flat fee as the RIAA has proposed.
Better yet, it would be better to get the service for the same free rate as the air-broadcasters do.

Not to piss on your cupcakes, but I don't think it will be very successful. It seems to me that the RIAA doesn't care all that much about profits from webcasting, they just want to stop it altogether until they figure out how the labels can completely control it.

That said, I'd likely help any way I can.

I'm not sure which are the 5 majors. At least 95% of my CDs are from independent labels.

I'd guess: Sony, Warner Bros., RCA, Universal... and I can't think of any others. Island maybe? Capitol?

Nettwerk is RIAA? Ouch.
At least Mute isn't. According to that list.

nec: I'm not trying to call bullshit on you, but you might be surprised by how many small, formerly indie labels have been swallowed up. Sometimes the chain is tough to follow (label1 is owned by label2 is owned by label3 is owned by BMG), but it's shocking how many small, established labels have gone down.

Yeah, it's all so secretive nowadays, in order to fool people into
thinking they're supporting an indy. There are still alot of indy
labels left though.. Dischord (even though i really don't listen
to any of their bands, aside from Minor Threat & Fugazi). They've
stuck to their guns. I think Touch & Go is still indy, as well as
Alternativr Tentacles. Too bad Mans Ruin went under..

Yeah, Dischord doesn't even use contracts. Ever. They have their own studio and design stuff and are truly DIY. I don't listen to most of the music they put out, either, but I have a lot of respect for them.

Me and friend was wondering why BAD BRAINS was never on Dischord?!
They were from D.C. in the early days. Of course, that would have
been Dischord's best band. And i bet Bad Brains would have outsold
Minor Threat... ;>

Because Bad Brains are for the most part a bigoted, homophobic band.

Did you hear about the H.R. vs. Go! and Mike Bullshit fiasco?

Doc lives in Woodstock, I used to fix his computer, and though he's kind of a dick, he seems by and large ok. But H.R. is a fucked up guy.

No. What happend? I did read about the whole H.R. thing with the
Big Boys when they toured through Texas. I don't agree with H.R.
and some of his views. He seems at times to over-react and seems
self-righteous at times. I try not to judge anyone for their actions
or words though. Because we all have done things we've regretted.

Bad Brains have a history of homophobic and mysoginistic lyrics. There's a song caleld Don't Blow Bubbles which is basically about how AIDS is a cure for homosexuality (on the "Quickness" album). Mike Bullshit (of ABC No Rio and Go! (kickass hardcore band) fame) went around to record stores putting stickers on the album saying something like "WARNING: This record contains homophobic lyrics."

Naturally, H.R. sent a bunch of his Rasta pals to kick the shit out of him.

Mike Bullshit talks a little about it at http://www.textfiles.com/music/bullshit.txt

Not anyone I want to support in any way. To me, they only have one good record, anyway, that I bought before I found out about it. (Banned in DC)

I thought i would post the lyrics to "Don't Blow Bubbles".

Don't blow no bubbles. Don't blow no troubles.
In times before there was no cure. Now through his will
it's healed for sure. Trash pit, trash pits, trash pits away.
It's not the weather, just P.M.A. We know you can do anything
and no thought witheld from thee. So hear i beseech thee to
always request and declare. Don't blow no bubbles.
Don't blow no troubles. Theres got to be a better way.
Don't blow no spikes. Ask Jah and he'll make the change.
We know you can do anything and no thought witheld from thee.
So here i beseech thee, always request and declare.
Don't blow no bubbles. Don't blow no spikes. Don't blow no
fudge buns. Ask Jah and he'll make the change. We know you
can do anything, no thought witheld from thee. So here i
beseech thee to always request and declare.

I don't think it's implying that "AIDS is the cure for
Homosexuality". I do know that H.R. follows alot of
the Rasta beliefs..and that is where his anti-homosexuality
view comes from. Alot of the rastas follow the old testament..

I am not "defending" H.R. I really don't know how people can
HATE one another..it just doesn't make sense..

peace.zaphod.

I think the message of the song is clear - don't be gay.

Rastafarianism has very little basis in the Bible. Many may follow the old testament, but that's not Rastafarianism.

Of course Universal Owns them now yes?
