the guy three doors down from me is developing an Ultimate IV clone
using the dungeon siege engine. How about that?

Wasn't there an "Ultima V: Lazarus" remake being done using Dungeon Siege
too? I saw some screenshots once and it looked promising.

They're all Ultima Dragons, aren't they? Good folks...they know Ultima
better than Garriott does.

The dialog patch they made vastly improves the disaster that was Ultima:
Ascension.

Wow, what a blast from the past. Almost every Commodore 64 game I remember
from the days of yore:

I'm playing Telengard right now and wow is it bringing back the memories.

Subject: UT antics

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Heh..well, our server has hit the big time. We've consistently been filling
up on a nightly basis, with people waiting in line (spectating) to get
in (and whining about the wait no less). Given the whining on Atari's
UT forums about how most servers are empty, I feel this is an accomplishment. :)

It's interesting having such a wide mix of players...regulars, visitors and
newbies, night after night! We managed to completely blow our bandwidth
limit too. I feel like Norm from Cheers some nights when I join in and
everyone shouts out "Chickenhead!"

The live voice chat probably annoyes the purists, but damn, I love it.
UT is the kind of game where you know people are going to be cocky, and
it's a blast slinging insults at each other "live" like that. One member
of our group is an actual comedian/magician from the Detroit area and he
has some of the best one-liners. Unlike Apple, Epic has embraced open
source projects completely...the voice chat is courtesy of the Speex codec,
and the in-game music is all Ogg Vorbis. Sweet.

And the best (or most perplexing?) part is that we typically don't run
the Epic maps. We have mapvote set up and the highest voted maps are
the custom ones our group made, or other groups (like the BDC Clan) have
made. Maybe that's exactly why our server is so full, given that the
"shipped" maps suck royally, by and large.

I made my first Mutator last night too. My end goal is to create a mutator
that puts the old Quake 1 rocket launcher into the game (bitmap and all).

Pacman is still a poof.

Anyhow, picked up COH sunday, it looks damn cool. The costumes alone are great, not even making your own, but sitting in the newbie zone and watching the shit that people come up with.

Too much. Valve is going to show more pre-filmed "footage" of Half-Life 2
at E3 this year.

Um. Supposedly the game was supposed to be DONE 6 months ago. Footage?
Why aren't they showing the full game? I find it impossible to believe
that this "delay" is because of the code theft.

They had no intention of releasing this game 6 months ago. My bet is they've
spent the last 6 months making their craptacular "Steam" distribution/DRM
system work. No way in hades I'm playing HL2 if it requires Steam.

I've heard that "Far Cry" is easily as good a game as HL2, at least
engine wise. Haven't tried that one yet.

Subject: The sad end to a great company

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Gamespot is reporting that the State of California has shut down Interplay:

http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/06/04/news_6100019.html

What a sad way to end such a great company. They gave us legends like
The Bard's Tale, Wasteland, Fallout...they were almost as legendary as Origin.
I still remember my first Interplay game on the C-64...a text/graphics
adventure called "Mindshadow". The Bard's Tale consumed a huge chunk of
my adolescent life as I studiously mapped out every damned square of each
dungeon on graph paper. Defeating Mangar felt like an accomplishment I
had EARNED dammit.

And Fallout...my god, this game resurrected the entire RPG genre at a time
the pundits were saying "RPGs are dead, RTS is king!"

Damn, I'll miss them. :(

Let's lay the corpse at the right door. Wasn't state of cali that did them in, they just cleaned up the mess. Their froggie president Herve Caen and his little bitch Eric ran the company into the ground, didn't bother to pay the rent, or taxes, or even payroll.

So now, either Titus (parent company, owned by Monsiour Herve the Frog) or Vivendi who supplied the last round of funding will now own all the IP.

Fuck The French.
