Had a going-away party online for someone who won't be able to log into any of the NWN servers for about a year.

I decided to log in as a DM, to help the crowd out.

Turned out to be a good idea.

The party was for someone named Kalere. She played a rogue that evening (her favorite character). Rogues are great for clearing traps and sneak attacks.

Well, unfortunately, someone had joined the party who didn't quite understand the point, and started running ahead all the time. It was very, very annoying... the *rogue* is
supposed to be the one running ahead (and no so much *running* as *searching* for traps and such).

So, I decided to try to inspire a little paranoia at the idea of running ahead.

I started laying large batches of deadly traps.. 20 at a time.. in front of monsters and at random places in the area they were playing.

One particular 'red shirt' (as I've come to call them) didn't get it.. and kept getting herself electrofried, blown up, spiked, or whatever.

Eventually, the 'red shirt' did seem to get the idea, and started sending her familiar ahead instead. So I created a very powerful monster and killed the familiar with it.

Grr.. so annoying.

But, the ongoing deaths of these people who wouldn't pay attention was such a delight. I was consistent... you *knew* when the traps would show up.. you just had to pay attention.

The paranoia was so complete, when the game crashed and we logged back in again, the entire party was much more careful to stay together and work as a team... just the way Kalere loves to play (and thus, I accomplished my goal; make the game fun for her).

All-in-all, a lot of fun for everyone. Except the red shirts, of course.

There is a special joy in hearing their screams...

Heh..sounds like an awful lot of fun!

I've been away from NWN for quite a while...need to finish the single-player
game. Sadly it's gotten so predictable...I love Bioware, but damn are they
predictable sometimes. I could squint at KOTOR and see NWN hiding in
behind...Aribeth turns bad, Bastila falls to the dark side...I could
see it coming a mile away. :) I almost wanted to call Bastila "Aribeth"
at times. But damn KOTOR was a great game!

Of late I've been obsessed with UT2k4. Me and a few friends formed an
"anti-clan"...just a joke, really but it seems to be catching on. We
call ourselves the "Asshole Kicker's Gang" and our server appears to
have a continuous stream of visitors...I'm surprised, actually, given
that the maps are ones I threw together myself! Heck, my maps were made
for me and my DM friends at our lan parties. For some reason, we get repeat
visitors, and that surprises me. All my maps follow the same naming scheme:
DM-FuckHut2K4, DM-FuckPalace2K4 and recently I finished DM-FuckZone
(a shameless rip-off of the hallowed Quake 1 map, "The Dark Zone"...I'm
actually proud of this one, it's quite frenetic). I'll never make CliffyB's
"Ownage" page though.

Basically our "Gang" exists to offend as many people as possible, and the
voice chat in UT2k4 makes it so much easier. :) But mapping is fun, even
if UnrealEd is horrible and completely undocumented. And having a group
of "regulars" visiting the server night after night is somewhat satisfying.
Although I was shocked to find that map downloads from our redirect server
went over a gig last night alone.

Still playing AC, but sorta not really. I barely log in anymore. Been working on my mud a lot, and seriously thinking about getting COH.

Some of my friends are playing COH, but it sounds like a cheap Diablo rip-off with no PvP.

Hrm, sure they're playing the same game? It's first person/third person, not isometric crap like diablo. I've heard nothing but good things, other then the lack of pvp, which they _may_ put in later down the road.

Yep, definitely CoH.

Hrm. Everything I've seen is it's more like eq/swg/etc.. then diablo.

Everyone says it's like Diablo II and NWN. You have contacts, they give you missions, then you run around and complete 'em. They say it could just as easily be a 1-player PS1 game.

Yeah, same shit mission wise.

Just killed my AC sub, logged in, and couldn't find a single fucking thing to do that I haven't already. I think my online gaming time is coming to a close, other then working on my mud.

I've pretty much reached the end with Shadowbane as well. Not sure what's next, we'll see.

I keep thinking about COH, if only because combat is supposed to be enjoyable, which is basically all I do. Hell, SWG had all the other perks, and it still wasn't fun.

Is anyone playing Ultima Online anymore? I've been continually amazed that
it has survived as long as it has (especially given the quality of the
game, which is horrid).

I bought the game to play on the "free" shards out there (the one run
by the Ultima Dragons). I can't believe how buggy the client is, and how
rotten the netcode is. Getting killed was an experience...there's nothing
like wandering around as a "ghost" for several days and finding no way to
get resurrected to kill the "fun" factor.

*snicker* I stopped playing years ago, I think the last hold out was either Spell or Ygorl. We need to find another game where we can go play as a ucg group, was fun running around UO with Xakor, Spell, Ygorl and Groo.
