RE: Skyrim

I've been obsessively playing the game for about a week now. They did some impressive work on that game. I wound up creating a sneak-mage... I sneak into an area, summon an atronach, and hide in the shadows while it mops up mobs. If this doesn't work, I might summon weaponry (haven't found anything to summon armor, like you could in Oblivion) and use restoration spells to keep me alive.

I can now fill soulstones for enchanting things just by using a summoned weapon to kill something.

I also nearly have 100 sneak, but only put points into the bits that allow me to be silent.

Meanwhile, I'm accumulating shouts and dragon kills to power them, and I've finished the mage quest line, so I'm the area's arch-mage now. I kill dragons by summoning an ice atronach to distract the dragon, and firing destructive lighting bolt spells at it. I switch between summoning and restoration spells often for this.

RE: Minecraft

Magazines can now officially review a game that people have been playing for about a year or two now. Huzzah!

I'm nowhere near The End in Minecraft, having started a new world after he got the world generation code worked out. I have a place with plenty of obsidian, but I've been tooling around with other things instead, never bothering with The End or The Nether. I want to set up a server and have a few friends play (co-operatively) together, as I think that might be really fun.

How It Should Have Ended:  Super Mario Brothers

But in the end, Yoshi extends his awesome tongue and destroys GlaDOS in one gulp.

I got started very slowly on Skyrim. Couldn't find a physical copy anywhere, so after the first weekend I gave up and downloaded it. I'm still punting around in Whitehall or whatever that second town is called.

I'll probably start out with the same strategy I used in Oblivion: one-handed weapons, light armor, and (later, once I get access to them) soul gems.

I Played portal 2 the other day and while it's fun in a collaborative screw-with-your-partner kind of way, it has as one might expect lost the charm of the original because you can't create something as new and novel as portal as a sequel and expect it to seem new.
but it was cute, just not as awesome as the first one.

I do like that they added co-operative play to Portal 2. It's kind of interesting to solve problems with someone else. Makes the puzzles more fiendish, although it also helps you learn who are asshats, and who are pretty cool folks, amongst your friends.

Skyrim:

I ... kinda got into this game a bit much. I'm at level 46 or so now, and while it's still not too hard to kill me (unlike Oblivion, where I essentially became invincible), I can deliver some terrible damage in my not-in-the-face sort of way (sneak mage... conjure things to fight for you and hide in the shadows).

I made arch-mage, and I've found quite a few shouts. I've started some of the other storylines, but I haven't really moved far with them, as I'm still exploring areas.

My character does have lychanthropy, though. It was kind of amusing when people might occasionally make comments related to it in your travels. I rarely ever use the beast form, though, as I'm much more deadly in human form.

Skyrim is one heck of a game! I'm currently level 43 with 91 hours played and IMO this is the best open-world CRPG since Ultima VII was released way back in 1992...

The map is just ridiculously huge! I've just sort of been checking everything out at a leisurely pace and there are still so many areas that I haven't opened up yet.

The GUI is kind of clunky and gimped due to it being a console port, and of course there are a few bugs here and there, but overall this is a really impressive game. The world feels much richer and livelier than Oblivion and there are so many different skill trees that I want to mess with, will need to play several different characters just to get a taste of everything...

I'm getting that feeling, too. By far one of the best games of its kind.

I participated in the recent beta weekend for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.  It was shiny.  I'm not a big MMO person (having played only one since the MUD days), but I am contemplating pre-ordering this one.

Re: Portal 2.

I like Portal 2. I can't say if I like it better than Portal or not, but I do appreciate the extra depth Portal 2 adds to the story. Plus, the character of Cave Johnson is just too absurd to not be funny.

There's a possibility that Valve may do a Portal 3. If so, then I'd suggest getting your comments and suggestions for the game over to Gabe Newell.

Grrr... the patch released from Skyrim has screwed up the game, in my opinion.

I mean, with dragons flying backwards, erratically, and fleeing from you if you do manage to damage it somehow, it makes it somewhat less-than-enjoyable.

Should be a patch this week to fix last week's broken patch... I haven't had any problems with dragons (the bug only affects old dragons, not newly generated dragons) but there's another bug which prevents your resistances from working and that one is a bit of a pain.

As some of you may know. I used to help host a heavily customized game server of the MuOnline flavor. (http://bit.ly/cjjK6n - global MU online..)

I loved it. I got to play a game I helped design.

A lot of the bugs that you're seeing in Skyrim (retreating dragons, skill problems, etc.) existed in our game, but we were the only private server to fix the bugs ourselves.

So, here's the news: we shut it down.

6 years of work. hundreds of dollars put into the project. thousands of work hours on web and game programming wasted.

Why did we shut it down?

The official reason we gave was: "Unable to maintain a large enough community"

The _REAL_ reason we shut down: we kept losing players to other servers' antics... fucking flamers and spammers would come in-game and blast across every bit of chat they could with bullshit.

Anyways... RIP MuValhalla (http://www.muvalhalla.com), you will be sorely missed.

Incidentally, since my game server has been shut down, i've lost most, if not all, interest in gaming in general. I just don't have the time or energy to play games anymore..... other than on my droid to pass some time while waiting for something....

bah... i hate getting older...

That's a shame, skpacman. I remember playing a bit of it a long time ago, but I just didn't really get into it. Still, it seemed you had something interesting going on there.

My character does have lychanthropy, though.

You know, I think they make a topical cream for that.

In Skyrim, the 'topical cream' is called 'saw the head off a witch and toss it into the fire in a specific burial ground'. But, yeah.

Oh, but it's updated to 1.3 now, Ygorl, and they promised the addressed the magic resistance issue. I haven't tried it yet, though.
