Does it count as a video game if there's little or no graphic element? I just finished King of Shreds and Patches a few weeks ago, an interactive fiction (text adventure) piece based on an old Call of Cthulhu RPG module. I got probably 10-12 hours worth of entertainment out of it, plus another 20 minutes of frustration, but the hint system is very good and I used it with great abandon toward the end. (More because I was impatient than because I wouldn't have been able to figure out the solution. I wanted to know how the story came out.)

I'm inept with the mouse that's exactly the kind of game I will never be good at. too much shaking.

I used to be okay with a mouse, but I can't do it anymore.

I stopped playing LOTRO after I showed up with a flamethrower and an AK-47 and they threw me off the server for using anachronistic weapons. (Someone should build RIFTS Online.)

RIFTS Online?

This is probably something else:

Bioware published a bunch of Star Wars games, so... the solution is undetermined.

Ok, I finally tried it -- it's kind of fun but I'm currently using a computer with a mechanical mouse, so it's very frustrating. I want to try again with an optical mouse.

Well, I've narrowed it down to three things.

1.  My router (seems unlikely)

2.  My cable modem (possible)

3.  two feet of water in the back yard covering the cable junction box.

Need to check the outside connections too.  Might be a bad ground.

Agreed, I rather look into a cheatbook than being stuck for month because the programmer chose to hide something important in a 3 pixel space where noone would expect it. The enterntainment value is in the playing, not in the frustration. Hell, I tried almost everything my english dictionary came up with, but Leisure Suite Larry would only remove his cloths on the command "undress".

Last cheat book I bought was MadWorld's guide to Ultimate Violence and it is a lovely made hardcover with really valuable hints. You can beat the game without it, but you'll miss some fun.

I wanted to try King of Shreds and Patches, but my gargoyle version (2010093) is in some perpetual loop after it tells me the key setup and I am asked to press space to continue. After that, it starts over again... :(

Poo... I have a level 60 Loremaster, with a nicely levelling weapon (at 60, your primary weapon can gain experience... kinda weird).

The King of Shreds and Patches is now available for purchase from the Amazon Kindle Store for a very reasonable $3.99.

Totally unrelated and probably old news:  http://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=211.0

Still suprised me to find it!

He actually has been spending a good bit of time on just that, as well as making an interface that will work for the Kindle.  The hope is that the new platform will open up the genre to a wider audience.

His own announcement:

If you haven’t played the desktop version ofKing, or even maybe if you have, I’d of course love for you to buy a copy to play on your Kindle. It’s basically the same experience on the Kindle that it was on the desktop, only with the bugs and typos that slipped into previous releases fixed and with a Kindle-ized interface that, in the opinion of myself and Amazon, looks and plays pretty great.

And whether you buy it or not, I could use your help getting the word out. If you play it, a review for Amazon would be very helpful in attracting more eyeballs. If you know someone who is not currently an IF nerd but that has a Kindle and just might enjoy it, please tell them about it. And of course blurbs on blogs, Twitter, etc., are always valuable.

If King does well enough to justify it, I hope to turn my fledgling Antiquarian Productions into a sustained venture for getting IF onto the Kindle. With a reusable engine now working at last (and don’t get me started on what a challenge that was), we have the potential to bring out the best of the IF community’s work on the Kindle, to reach new people who have never heard of IF but would love it if they did, and to give some long-suffering authors a chance to earn a little money from their work. It’s early days yet, and much is uncertain, but the potential seems pretty awesome from where I’m sitting. Won’t you help to make it happen?

I think his blog is very worth reading anyway, as he has been writing a great deal about the history of video and computer gaming as a whole, not just IF.
