OCC is one of the best things to do with (especially young) kids at Christmastime. I don't recommend doing the whole "feed the poor at the homeless shelter" thing for young kids because many homeless are mentally ill and that can be a bit freaky for a young kid.

I just found out last night that there will be an overnight for Girl Scouts in my area where they will be making OCC boxes (rotating from station to station, making things to go into the boxes). Sadly it is happening on my birthday and I have my own Girl Scout event the very next day so I can't take my troop to it. :(

that's pretty cool. My parents were charitable, but we didn't do things like that enough. I think there wasn't awareness. I just donated my hair for cancer kids for the first time this year, which is kind of sad considering how many times I've lopped off a good 6-8 inches and if I'd known I could donate, I might have waited for the opportunity to make it 10.

It's a good time of year for genuine charity. We'll be participating in "Operation Christmas Child" [http://www.samaritanspurse.org] again this year. It's a good way to make our kids at least a little more aware of some of the things that are truly important.

They must have pushed the idea of "OCC packing parties" this year ... we had one too (but we didn't go because we'd already done our boxes independently).

I got a visit from the TV licence enforcement people once. They wanted to come in and look at my TV. I told them they couldn't so they went away and came back with the police who also wanted to come in and look at my TV. I told them they couldn't as well.

The discussion began to get a little heated with threats of arrest so I suggested they come in for a cup of tea but they couldn't look at my TV because I didn't own one.

In all the time I didn't have a T.V. no one ever came to find out why I had no licence, and that made me quite sad, I SOOO wanted to do what davew did.

Wow, I don't know what's worse: your TV license fees (ok, over there I guess it's "licence" fees) or our nonstop cable rate hikes.

i'm betting the cable rates are higher... "basic" cable package + local stations = ~~$45/month (with no frills or other services, depending on company, state, county, etc..)

One of my favorite bits in television.  Aabsolutely Fabulous' "Birth" episode, where you get to see how Patsy was born:

If you read the various "the decade in television" articles that are obligatorially appearing everywhere right now ... they're all talking about how reality TV transformed the medium and made it so much more wonderful.

Bletch.

They also praise the evolution of sitcoms, in that they no longer have laugh tracks.

reality tv shows the mental illness of a society - we are willing to allow ourselves to be abused for the entertainment of others in the hopes of some prize.

and people are somehow entertained by that.

as for laugh tracks... I kinda miss them

don't you forget about boulevard journalism, where they put a camera next to joe average who has to explain what he's doing right now:

yea, i'm standing at the sink, and got it filled with hot water. so I don't burn my fingers, I got those rubber gloves. To even make the hot water more effective, i've added this green liquid manufactured by procter & gamble. Now i'll start testing it with this cup, which has nasty coffee leftovers in the ground,

Oh! it didn't work out yet, i'll have to take the brush! ah! now you see it can be dryed again and is ready for use again! So no need for one way cups.

They should use laugh tracks on reality television.

There should be more violence on reality television. Random explosions, collapsing buildings, that kind of thing. Annoying melodrama suddenly interrupted by a truck crashing through the front wall of the house. Now that's something I'd watch.

I don't miss laugh tracks.

After all, the best episodes of MASH were the ones that didn't have laugh tracks.

Gwar on Jerry Springer... I have to say, I don't think I've laughed like this in a while.
