I've seen him on ABC being interviewed. He lost his job because of the incident.
It was no hoax.

Snopes on the incident:

I didn't realize Soupy Sales actually pulled the 'send me the small green pieces of paper' gag on his show, long before it became a kind of regular joke amongst comedians. Damn, but he was cutting edge.

Pity he got in trouble for that.

November 9. Today is November 9.

And it marks the earliest date ever, at which I've already gotten to the point where I've had WAY TOO MUCH STUPIDFEST.

On television. In stores. In other places. HELLO PEOPLE, WE HAVEN'T EVEN STARTED PLANNING THANKSGIVING YET. When I go into Home Depot to buy a can of exterior paint, which I can still apply to the sides of my house BECAUSE IT ISN'T COLD AND SNOWING LIKE IT IS IN LATE DECEMBER, the last thing I want is to be assaulted with STUPIDFEST DECORATIONS the moment I walk into the store.

And I really don't want to enter into the annual period during which I stop watching what little television I do watch, because I can't stand the relentless assault of consumerism with the not so thinly veiled attempt at making it festive by rattling a bunch of sleigh bells in the background.

IT'S TOO F%$^$%&$KING EARLY. Even if I wasn't a grouchy old scrooge, it would STILL be too early.

Ah! Gd bless the BBC. Commercial free T.V.

Like IG I watch very little television, prolly only 2-3 hours a week, but at least some of it is ad free.

G-d bless bittorrent. Even better :)

two one hour shows in an hour and a half, commercial-free and only a day or two after it airs in the US :)

I <3 Dexter

As for the whole StupidFest thing... Yeah, I appreciate that the commercialism of Hannuka in Israel is restricted to the bakeries and supermarkets competing to make the most enticing possible "sufganiyot" (donuts). Sure, it totally misses the purpose of the holiday, but it's yummy and it's not much of an assault.

It'll be worse than ever this season because of thesoft economy. I was kinda hoping the economy would push people back in the right direction with regards to Stupidfest.

This year I get to celebrate in a new, different and fun way. It seems we receive 1/3 of all our donations for the entire year during a 6 week period which will be staring here in about a week. I will be SLAMMED busy at work processing donations and that will make me happy.

More donations, more we can help people. That'll make me feel much better about the holidays again.

It's a good time of year for genuine charity. We'll be participating in "Operation Christmas Child" [http://www.samaritanspurse.org] again this year. It's a good way to make our kids at least a little more aware of some of the things that are truly important.

Actually, I think it is paid to the British Broadcasting Corporation, not the government.

Lily Tomlin's operator character was always a great character to me. It's a pity it's so anachronistic now.

Or, perhaps, it isn't such a pity.

Right, and who owns the BBC? from wikipedia: It operates under a Royal Charter issued by the British Crown.

Absolutely correct. So the Queen owns it not the government.

The opening line in the movie napolean dynamite, is of napolean standing at the side of the road waiting for the school bus.
He looks at the road, he looks at his watch, and heaves a long sad sigh.
I wish this sigh had a name so I could use it in print instead of only being able to use it in person, because that is the sound I'd be making right now.

that's pretty cool. My parents were charitable, but we didn't do things like that enough. I think there wasn't awareness. I just donated my hair for cancer kids for the first time this year, which is kind of sad considering how many times I've lopped off a good 6-8 inches and if I'd known I could donate, I might have waited for the opportunity to make it 10.

I got a visit from the TV licence enforcement people once. They wanted to come in and look at my TV. I told them they couldn't so they went away and came back with the police who also wanted to come in and look at my TV. I told them they couldn't as well.

The discussion began to get a little heated with threats of arrest so I suggested they come in for a cup of tea but they couldn't look at my TV because I didn't own one.
