Cool!! The operating system installed by default is Ubuntu -- Windoze is available but it's an option, not the standard config. I like these people.

Now if they really want to carry on the Commodore legacy they'll make it inexpensive enough for a cheapskate like me to buy one.

they got the multitouch technology by aquiring fingerwords 5 years ago or so.

the first real cool device you can buy from them is the new apple touch mouse.

i'll buy a keyboard if they make one again.

From what I'm hearing using RoboCopy took one of our backup processes from 15 minutes to 4 minutes.. Not sure of the details yet though.

Okay, got a JetDirect card from an IRC friend, $20 shipped.

Works great.

Thank you guys for helping me track down the proper cable. I will save that info for future reference :)

A few years ago I went to go do my first oil change on my bmw motorcycle. The filter is encased in such a way that the only way to get it off (or on
for that matter) is with the bmw specific oil filter wrench. Can't use one of those squeezie jobbies, and I can't jam a screwdriver in it to get it off because that still leaves me with the problem of getting the new one one.
so I drive 30 miles to the closest bmw bike place, pay $30 for an oil filter wrench. Change the oil, go to my garage to find a home for my new wrench and I place it down..... right next to a bmw motorcycle oil filter wrench.
It would seem that the guy who sold me the bike gave me one and I just forgot.

and some more RDBMS advice from the trenches: just drop all your
foreign key constraints already. if your app is small, you don't need

HA! That's funny. I hate fk constraints almost as much as I hate stored procedures, but try explaining to a territorial dba (read: all of them) that their fancy dancy constraints are fucking everything up.

Keep saying the word "freeware" a lot. Maybe it'll make RMS's head explode.

It does, but as someone who used IBM ThinkPads exclusively for a very long time, I can tell you, you'll get over it. When I was shopping for my current laptop I eventually came to the conclusion that insisting on a trackpoint was going to significantly reduce the scope of machines that were available to me.

I have an HP Mini and you're dead on with your assessment of it. Good screen resolution (brilliantly LED-backlit too), a nice keyboard, but the battery life is meh. I've got a flash card in mine instead of a hard disk so that does help a bit, but it's only 16 GB (not a problem for me because I don't load up on locally installed software, but for your use it'd probably be a bit cramped).

And I can tether it to my G1, which is awesome :)

I dunno how much you've played in the finance world, but none of
those things matter there. Speed is king matters there.

And yet, even they, typically use Sybase. And fancypants abstractions like message queueing. There's a level below which busybusy people just generally don't want to go, evenn the performance oriented busybusy people.

when you use ekiga, you sign up an account with, your sip address is and when you fire up ekiga it logs into, so I think is the actual gateway and in this case the program ekiga is really just a dumb voip client, it doesn't actually function as a sip server I don't think. I could be wrong.

So what? RAM is cheepo.

cheapo, but it got its price. And once its used up and no more fits in, you need another box

Facebook got 30% hardware savings out of transpiling php to c++; Maybe it would have been just 20% with a java solution. Interpreting isn't for free. No matter how much you pimp the interpreter, it won't reach the original.

And such a huge servlet frame work isn't for free either.

The article in The Register does make a lot of sense. AMD could potentially be worth more to Dell on its own than as a subsidiary.

Some observers are also suggesting that there exists a clause in the AMD-Intel cross licensing agreement that would cause that agreement to terminate if AMD is acquired.
