Okay, my original reason for wanting to enter a message here... anyone heard of the Cowon A3 player?

My iPod disappeared. Gone. Can't find it anymore. So I wanted to find something decent that could play ogg vorbis files, and found this player.
It seems to have some decent reviews although I think there were some concerns about the menu system.

And, now that I have it, I'm kind of trying to get comfortable with it, and finding the menu system is a little 'sensitive'. It's hard to actually select anything because you have to press down on a knob that's also used for navigating left, right, up, and down... so when you press down, it likes to also move up, or down, or left, or right. Frustrating.

I hope to test the audio quality later, when I have a chance.

That's how the crackberry (non touch screen versions) works, if you've never played with one.
It works well enough if the push switch isn't very resistant which is sounds like yours is, Perhaps that's how they got out of a lawsuit.

I'll probably become comfortable with it, eventually. This may be a learning-curve issue.

I seem to have a problem with the screen, though. Three lines running over the screen at all times... looks ugly. I suspect, though, it's a rendering problem that I might resolve by flashing the device.

Sorry about your ipod. I had a iRiver H320 with rockbox on it, which I loved.
One day I couldn't find it. Eventually I had to conclude that it was stolen somewhere, though I don't know where. But maybe one day it will turn up...
Anyway I recently got an iRiver H340 off craigslist for $100 and rockboxed it and I am happy again :) But enough about me... As far as the cowon, I looked into the Cowon X5 when I lost myother player.. and it has a very good reputation. THe X5 because it supprts rockbox and has a line input for audio recording... But I read a lot of good reviews of cowon. SO it seems worth giving it a chance. If you are interested in a player witha nice screen for video the other brand to look at is the Archos. Jaime used to have an AV420 and it was very good, very well constructed device with impressive capabilities.
When you docked it, it became a whole DVR solution with IR remove, IR command of your cable box, S-Video in/out... Really cool.

This also has A/V in/out... I can hook this thing up to a television (HD too, I think). It can record television shows, and supports 'remove television', whatever that is.

It's supposed to be very nice.. I tried to make sure before I bought it.
The only downside is their tech-support, so I'm hoping I can resolve my problems myself.

Haha, "remove television".. BAMF! BTW when I typed "IR remove" before, I meant IR remote. My fingers apparently felt otherwise :)

Heh... 'remote' not 'remove'. But, yeah, that'd be a really awesome feature, if it could 'remove television'.

One of my best misspellings yet!

The A3 is very, very nice to hear driving to work. I could hear details I couldn't hear when I played the same files on my iPod. Awesome sound.

Looks like I'm exchanging it, though. The front panel's three lines still isn't resolved, despite reflashing the thing. I'm hoping the other one (coming tomorrow) addresses the problem.

Don't like the controls as much. I find it difficult to select an item without accidentally selecting some other item, because of the shitty controls.

how bad is it to unplug an ide device while it's one.
on?
I've got a dvd drive I want to ake out of this machine, but it's on and I've got 2 vms hooked up with vpn connections and the machine itself has a zillion windows open each with useful state. I should really by running my life in a vm so I can just save, but I'm not.
So I'm really tempted to just pull the ide cable out while it's on.

Ever done that?

You're not supposed to do that, but as long as you remove the power cable first and the data cable second, it is likely that you'll be ok. No promises though.

I've seen it done. My boss is kind of infamous for doing crazy stuff like this.

good point about the power first though, makes sense.
I wussed out and actually shutdown the machine. Neat thing was, I took the drive out restarted, reloaded my vm and the vpn connection came back. I didn't have to reauthenticate.
I can see that being a security issue.

You mean an "engine order telegraph" ... it does look like that. That's very cool how the scroll bar was made to curve like that.
