I tried removing the card, removing the 'shroud' around the card, and blowing out any possible dust therein... but the card still overheated.

So, I bought an eVGA GeForce GTX 275 card, figuring if it didn't address the problem, it would at least be an upgrade.

It overheats, too.

The driver apparently leads to overheating.

The card does come with a small cord that you plug into a GPIO header on the motherboard... if I could find such a thing on the motherboard, it might help.  I think it is used to help regulate the fan on the graphics card, making the fan blow harder when the card is used for gaming.

Never clean the dust out of a computer. It's like the muck in the car engine, you clean it out and it stops working.

That might be the lesson to learn here, but in this case it was more a matter of updating the drivers that got me in trouble, I believe.

Oh, yeah, and RivaTuner is the tool that helps tune the video card.  I am currently working with the assumption that the 'auto' settings for the card's fan got fucked up with the upgrade, and have retuned them.  We'll see how well that works.

Ah....isn't RivaTuner for ATI cards?  GeForce are NVidia...could there be a conflict there?

RivaTuner may be used for nVidia cards. In fact, I found this tool by looking for information related to the nVidia card, and read that this was specifically the best tool to use for tweaking card settings. I am not aware of this tool being useful (or not) for ATI cards.

It has worked considerably better; I no longer overheat. Now, I'm just getting the occasional crash that I've always gained. I figure this may be bugs in whatever game I'm using.

Reprogramming the automatic fan, yes.  It wasn't quite aggressive enough where it should be.

wow...  5965 lines of patchwork code and no html output... bad css links (which are over-ridden by putting script right behind it anyways) and lots of loop-holes.

How did you find that page?

you also can't live without paying taxes, you can't eat without paying a sales tax, there's a lot of things that suck in this world, but most of them were institutions before you were born so you take them for granted.
your kids won't think twice about setting up a paypal account so they can buy stuff on ebay.

What's wrong with PayPal? It really is better suited to Internet-based payments than anything else out there. You get to authenticate every payment yourself.
