Indeed.  Odd how that seems like it happened yesterday.  It's just as enjoyable now!

Groo - I still laugh about it from time to time.. Specifically the conversation. Not the aftermath..

But getting away from the films, has anyone read the last few years' reams of new plot lines? In the lastest set they are 40 years past the Battle of Yavin.

I was quite flabbergasted at the volume of Star Wars novels available from third-party authors last time I was at the book store.

I picked up the first three books written by Timothy Zahn, but I haven't had the chance to read them yet. If I remember correctly, he was the first author other than Lucas to publish Star Wars fiction. Once I get through those, I'd like to pick up some more books.

Actually, I think the very first was Splinter of the Mind's Eye, by Alan Dean Foster.

Splinter of the Mind's Eye - which is SO TERRIBLE that no one should ever read it!! It's ALMOST bad enough for humor value, but not quite. Also - it was written between the original releases of A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, before certain KEY familial plot points were revealed. Ye-ech.
(I wonder how embarrassed Alan Dean Foster was about that, once RotJ came out......)

I really liked the Timothy Zahn books, but lost my taste for the books once Kevin J. "Destroyer of Fandoms" Anderson stuck his meddling nose in. LORD I still hate that man.

(The problem being that all the books form their own canon, so that each subsequent author was forced to build on the decisions of prior authors. Throw one crappy author into the mix - such as Kevin J. Andersuck - and all of a sudden the whole canon is thrown to hell.)

In the cold dark days of winter, some of my friends and I get together to have a marathon viewing of some saga of a movie.
This weekend was star wars, the original 3, without the cgi enhancements.
There was lots of "hey, look at that! no cgi enhancement."
It really does look better thay way.
It was only I think 7 hours, and that was with a rather long stop for dinner.
Last year we did all 3 lord of the rings exntended DVD. 11 hours 10 minutes, no breaks, no credits. That Was Miserable.

LOTR has some nice moments, but you really need some breaks in there for that one.

We actually had an AWESOME Lord of the Rings extended edition marathon party, as an indirect birthday shindig the year after RotK came out. (All the LotR movies were released in theaters either on my birthday or within a day of my birthday, and I was really missing that the subsequent year!) The key was that it was a room stuffed full of geeks who adored the movies but had already seen them plenty of times, so that there was no pressure to focus exclusively on the movies except at our favorite bits. And what made the party AWESOME was that Tim and I served exclusively food from the books aaaall day long.
So we started with a very Bilbo Bagginsy brunch (second breakfast!) of bacon and eggs and seedcakes and tea, and then we had a version of lembas bread, all kinds of other snacky things mentioned in the books, and we finished up with a kickass rabbit stew (WITH taters) that would've made Sam's gaffer proud. I also relabeled ALL the beer, so that we had Prancing Pony Porter, Rohan Red Ale, Green Dragon Bywater Brown Ale, and Golden Perch Eastfarthing Best Bitter.

Dang, I have to throw another one of these parties. Mmmmm RABBIT STEW.

Zahn! They picked him for a reason. I was amazed, he captured Lucas' flavor perfectlyh.

But Kevin J. Anderson... bleaeeahhhh

did I mention this?
2 weeks ago or so some friends and I got together and watched all 3 star wars originl movies.
And of course after seeing all three together, you get to see the big picture of the story.
I'm sure all of these things have been picked to death over the past 20 years but I noticed something for the first time...
Mr Colt45 fucked han big time, right?
He sold him out to the empire, let him stew in it until vader could show up, and then had him carbonited before he changed his mind and decided to help his 'friend'
Well... let's put some additional perspective on the picture.
Lando apparently lost the millenium falcon to han in a fair poker game. Okay, that sucks, maybe we're still harboring some ill will, that's no small prize to lose, but what do I know from betting big in poker.
But here's the kicker: Lando built himself up from a raider/gunrunner/whtever into a real businessman. He ran a legit business and was doing just fine until han starts looking at his computer and sees that lando is nearby.
That's it. At the moment han decided to visit lando, lando was fucked and there was nothing he could do about it.
I'd say han fucked lando pretty bad there, though lando probably would have gotten away with his life where lando's subversion almost cost han his life.
Still, han was very far from completely innocent here.
