My friend Otis is dead at age 94.

Born in Oklahoma and a graduate of Oklahoma State in Animal Husbandry, Otis married his childhood sweetheart Edna who survives him at age 93.

Otis and Edna raised their family on the Navajo reservation, all four grew up bilingual, English and Navajo. Otis taught animal husbandry and agriculture as well as bee-keeping. It was Otis that got me into beekeeping 15 years ago.

Otis' second career, after his children had grown and left home, was as a fund raiser from the Boy Scouts of America. His third career was after attending California State University at Davis and becoming a certified Master Gardener.

For the last 20 years Otis has been growing vast quantities of vegetables for local old folks homes. Neighbors would see him chugging down the back roads in his Sears garden tractor pulling trailers full of llama dung to compost on his land.

Otis died while picking tomatoes.

Otis was unique. I asked for, and got, a rattlesnake skin from his collection.
Couldn't think of anything small enough that would remind me of his escapades.

Otis was a prankster. One day, after his prostrate surgery, he asked me to mow the back few acres of his property. He didn't tell me that there was a nest of tiny wasps beneath one bush. Instead he stood there with a Mona Lisa grin waiting for me to hit the shrub.

Served him right that the riding mower just threw the whole nest at his feet.

One of his stories about the Navajo reservation was about a huge beehive they found hanging from a cliff. After roping down to it Otis saw that it was anchored way back into the crevice so he and a few Navajos went for buckets and more rope. In the 1930's funds were tight so they didn't have beekeeper suits. Instead they bundled up in heavy clothing and pulled some rags over their heads and roped down. Others atop the cliff lowered buckets and they began filling them with honeycomb.

What they didn't bargain for was the quantity of bees or their aggressiveness.
By the time they got back atop the cliff each were stung hundreds of times.
Edna has a photo of Otis with a head that looked like one of those shrunken apple dolls.

Men and women are different species:

Q: "Is your heartbeat irregular today?"
A: "It doesn't hurt."
Q: "Does it sometimes hurt?"
A: "No, it's irregular."
Q: "That was my original question, 'Is it irregular today?'"
A: "I told you, no!"

From the many yuppies living in these parts.

Otis was a regular feature around here. We'd often round a corner at high speed only to encouter Otis chugging down the road in his 16hp Craftsman garden tractor pulling a small trailer overloaded with manure back to his spread to compost.

Walking in his garden was like walking on cushions there was so much organic material worked into the soil.

I could never make enough compost, when I had a garden. And the ex got into a tree cutting period... The organic stuff gets used up, so it needs to be replenished regularly.
The damn yuppies around here got dogs. *That* ain't compostable.

Sure they are, just chop them up into small enough pieces.

Phony doctor gives free breast exams

Thu Apr 20, 11:40 AM ET

MIAMI (Reuters) - A 76-year-old man claiming to be a doctor went door-to-door in a Florida neighborhood offering free breast exams, and was charged with sexually assaulting two women who accepted the offer, police said on Thursday.

One woman became suspicious after the man asked her to remove all her clothes and began conducting a purported genital exam without donning rubber gloves, investigators said.

The woman then phoned the Broward County Sheriff's Office and the suspect fled. He was arrested at another woman's apartment in the same Lauderdale Lakes neighborhood on Wednesday, a sheriff's spokesman said.

The white-haired suspect, Philip Winikoff, carried a black bag and claimed to be visiting on behalf of a local hospital.

"He told the woman that he was in the neighborhood offering free breast exams," sheriff's spokesman
Hugh Graf said in a statement.

At least two women, both in their 30s, let him into their homes and he fondled and sexually assaulted them, the investigators said.

Winikoff was not a doctor, Graf said. He worked as a shuttle driver for an auto dealership.
