Subject: Mackanin pulls Herrera for not hustling

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Odubel Herrera continues to baffle and frustrate. Phillies manager Pete Mackanin pulled Herrera from Tuesday night's 5-0 loss to the Astros following his at-bat in the sixth inning. Herrera struck out swinging on a 1-2 curveball, but never bothered to run to first base when the pitch hit the dirt.

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

In December, 2014 Dick Allen missed being elected to the Hall of Fame by one Veterans Committee vote. To his supporters it was bittersweet result. To come so close and miss was disappointing. But it also was an impressive showing for a candidate who had never come close to the required 75 percent during his 15 years of eligibility for the Baseball Writers Association ballot.

Subject: Trade target Kendrick exits with sore left hand

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

A strong candidate to be traded by the Phillies before Monday's 4 p.m. ET non-waiver Trade Deadline, outfielder Howie Kendrick left Wednesday night's game against the Astros at Citizens Bank Park in the fourth inning, one frame after he was hit by a pitch on his left hand. The Phillies announced that Kendrick has soreness in his left hand, but it was unclear if he will miss any time.

Subject: Facing AL's best, Nola fans 10 to lead Phils

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Baseball's best offense met its match on Wednesday night in Aaron Nola. Nola struck out a career-high 10 batters in six stellar innings, and Cameron Rupp blasted a pair of two-run homers for his first career multihomer game to lead the Phillies to a 9-0 win over the first-place Astros at Citizens Bank Park. The loss was just the 13th in 50 road games this year for the Astros, who own the Majors' best road winning percentage (.740).

Subject: Competition ahead, Rupp breaks free of slide

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Next season, decisions will need to be made at catcher for the Phillies. To that end, Cameron Rupp hit a pair of two-run home runs in Wednesday night's 9-0 victory over the Astros at Citizens Bank Park. In doing so, he became the first Phillies catcher with a multihomer game since Mike Lieberthal on Sept. 17, 2006, at Houston's Minute Maid Park.

It began innocuously enough. Aaron Altherr, dropped to seventh in the lineup due to past struggles against Julio Teheran, drew a walk in his first at-bat. He then demolished, beyond a shadow of a doubt, a solo homer deep into the second deck in left to lead off the fifth, sparking a seven-run Phillies outburst that powered a series-opening win over Atlanta.
