Subject: Klentak confident offense headed in right direction

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

A couple weeks ago Pete Mackanin said he hoped the Phillies would acquire a couple impact bats in the offseason. He asked for just one on Tuesday. But will he get even that? It remains to be seen. Phillies general manager Matt Klentak said Wednesday at Turner Field that he agreed with Mackanin that the Phillies' offense needed to improve in 2017 -- the Phillies are last in baseball, averaging 3.80 runs per game -- but it doesn't mean it must come in free agency.

Dansby Swanson recorded a pair of extra-base hits through the first three innings and Matt Kemp provided Mike Foltynewicz more cushion with a two-run home run that accounted for just a portion of the damage the Braves produced against Adam Morgan in Wednesday night's 12-2 win at Turner Field.

The visitors' clubhouse door opened Wednesday night at Turner Field and Phillies manager Pete Mackanin unexpectedly emerged, still in his uniform. Mackanin and every big league manager conducts postgame interviews on the road in the manager's office, but Mackanin changed locations to the service level following a 12-2 loss to the Braves because Ryan Howard and A.J. Ellis had called a players-only meeting. "It's nice to see," Mackanin said. "Somebody cares. It's good. It's a good thing."

Pete Mackanin emerged from a long meeting Friday evening at Citizens Bank Park believing the Phillies have a plan in place to make some much needed improvements before next season. "Everybody was pretty much on the same page," Mackanin said. Mackanin and the Phillies' coaching staff met with president Andy MacPhail, general manager Matt Klentak and others to discuss the state of the organization and upgrades they need to make before Spring Training.

The Phillies announced Friday night that right-hander Zach Eflin had successful surgery to repair his left patella tendon. Eflin will be immobilized for six weeks, but he is expected to make a full recovery and be ready by Spring Training. The Phillies placed Eflin on the disabled list in August because of patellar tendinopathy in both knees. He had surgery to repair the right knee last month.

Subject: Big hit elusive as Phils drop opener to Mets

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Twice in two years, the Mets arrived at the midpoint of their season a broken team, seemingly unfit for October. Twice in two years, the Mets went on to salvage their lost summer, combining new parts with old ones to stage a late-year renaissance. Their 5-1 win over the Phillies on Friday moved them within one win or one Cardinals loss of clinching their second consecutive postseason berth, while ensuring that they will at least qualify for a tiebreaker after the regular season.

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

If everybody returns healthy in February 2017, Alec Asher will be a part of a stable of impressive young Phillies arms. Asher made his final start of the season Friday night in a 5-1 loss to the Mets at Citizens Bank Park. He allowed five hits and three runs and struck out four in six-plus innings. He went 2-1 with a 2.28 ERA in five starts. His performance this month is a dramatic reversal from last season, when he went 0-6 with a 9.31 ERA in seven starts.

There won't be any scoreboard watching as the Mets play the second game of the series against the Phillies on Saturday. Their Wild Card fate is in the hands of Bartolo Colon. But first Colon must best the Phillies, who start Phil Klein but will rely mostly on their bullpen, as Klein hasn't started a game since the beginning of September.

Even Mets manager Terry Collins, an enduring optimist, swears he did not expect this back in mid-August. A sub-.500 team missing more than a half-dozen of its best players, the Mets struggled to beat back the notion that perhaps this just was not their year.

The final game of the 2016 season will be infinitely more memorable for Ryan Howard than for the Mets, who used it solely as a tuneup for postseason play. During and after a pregame celebration in his honor on Sunday, Howard received multiple ovations from one of the Phillies' largest home crowds of the season. He finished 0-for-4 in the final game of his 13-year career in Philadelphia, a 5-2 win over the Mets.
