Can you tell the difference between a 128K mp3 and a 320K mp3??

I got it on the first try ... I'd like to think I've got the ear for it, but since the chances of guessing it right are 50% I can't be so sure. It would be great if they tested you on a bunch of different clips.

(128k and 320k clips of the Cheesetones would be appropriate)

I got it on the first try as well. The clip they are using makes it hard because it has no deep bass at all and not much in the high end. If they had used something better recorded to begin with it would have been more obvious.
But you can definitely hear a difference, the 320K is less distorted especially when you have got a lot going on at once.

I can't tell the difference and am much happier for it.
I can understand the mentality of the audiophile, just as I am a car snob, but I have to say I save tons of money on not needing or even wanting high end stereo equipment.
I can tell the difference between a 64k mp3 and a 320k mp3, I have a song I got somewhere as a 64k mp3 and it's just fine.
I later found the 320k version and it's obviously much cleaner, but it doesn't make me enjoy the song more.
And years and years ago I recorded some siouxsie and the banshees song and somehow I oversaturated the tape so there was distortion on the heavy parts and I actually ended up liking the song more that way. Takes all kinds. Sometimes a perfect reproduction of the original isn't he best thing. Consider remakes of 70's songs...

Then again I'd save a lot more money if I didn't have a thing for german sports cars.

I'd be interested in hearing a test for the discussion we had a while back regarding speaker cable. It would be difficult to do over the Internet, though.

what was the discusssion about speaker cable?

The discussion centered around whether a $20 roll of 14-gauge zip cord from Home Depot is just as good as $20/foot Monster Cable for most speaker systems.

I heard about that, the reward was like $200 or something.
The concert was a nice touch.

The reward was $100. I think the concert is likely worth far more.

The violin is worth 4 million dollars, I think.  The article did mention the value of the violin somewhere.

Subject: ASIMO to Conduct Symphony Orchestra
DeviceGuru writes to mention that Honda's ASIMO robot will
apparently be leading the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in a performance

this proves that conductors don't actually do anything.

Well, that remains to be seen.

If the orchestra's performance sucks, you'll know there's more to it than sticking a robot up there.

I've been to enough concerts and talked to enough members of orchestras to have a pretty good backing that the orchestra doesn't really need the conductor. If the conductor has worked and done practice sessions with the orchestra it can be very helpful, they can actually coordinate things.
But when they get a famous guest conductor "for one night only" all they do is make a mess.
