Thorn, I feel the same way when I hear those songs. That was about when I started really liking music, and it was exciting to listen to the radio and hear these songs. That feeling faded in the mid-eighties and made me branch out beyond what radio offered. But I remember riding in my parent's car saying "ooh, I like this song!"

I would also add The Tide is High by Blondie to that list.

Agreed. For some reason, that's the one song that I think quintesentially represents the essence of that time period. It's definitely the first thing that comes to mind when I recall listening to the radio around the turn of the decade.

Everytime I hear The Tide is High, I picture my male kindergarten teacher dressed in drag singing it on stage at the year-end talent show when I was little.
Talk about fun associations... still LOVE the song though

Yeah, The Tide is High is also one that I really like.

1981 is when I got my drivers license, so I guess it's when I started
really doing things I wanted to do. Exploring the state, running around
with friends and just basically having a good time.

The POS Kraco in my Oldsmobile cranked out tunes that are now burned in
my memory.

Hey, technical question:
I'm going to get XM or sirius.
Any preferences? So far all the suggestions I got amounted to: Their technically differenty, but both good enough, so it's pretty much the variety of stations.

Anybody have any more to add to that?

Sirius is expected to outlast XM radio. (at least, that's what Berko says from an investment POV)

Well Sirius has Eva Longoria doing their radio ads and that's enough for me.. <GRIN> Actually I have no clue whatsoever.

We listen to Sirius... at home. And we like it a lot. I've never listened to XM so I don't know about that FWIW.

If I were going to get satellite radio, I'd go XM because they have Opie & Anthony, while Sirius only has Howard Stern.

I miss O&A. I can only imagine what their satellite show is like.

Well, I have Sirius, and I've had no complaints. The reason I chose it over XM is two-fold.

1.) I'm about to have DISH Network, and the Sirius channels are broadcast over it. I won't have to memorize different channels for my digital music stations via my theatre system.
2.) Most importantly, XM is a Clear Channel corporate whore.

On the otherside, XM has more "local traffic and weather" stations.

Yea, I'm with Dish Network, which is how we have Sirius. When we went to Adelphia for that ONE MONTH OF INSANITY, we really missed Sirius... (and Boomarang, but that's another room)

What I'd really like to see in a satellite-radio thing is the ability to stream internet radio to it. If XM/Sirius had that, I'd have that in my truck right now. Dial in an address and stream MP3s through the internet. Set up your own stream on your home broadband and you've got your own radio station you can listen to anywhere.
Think iTunes-radio, only in your truck.

It'll happen. Bandwidth is only getting faster and cheaper; applications that were thought to be totally unfeasible 10-15 years ago are now sitting in everybody's pockets.

You may already find at least two different radio-streaming services ('radio' in the loosest sense of the word).

Shoutcast and iRadio come to mind.

Kraftwerk were MOST excellent at the Greek Theatre last night.  Nice night for a show too.  Nice seats for the show as well, six rows from the stage.

They are still quite relevant.  I like how they appeal to 21st century technoheads as well as old-school hip-hop b-boyz.
