just seen the golden compass w/wife and kid...we all liked it, none of us have read it. It was good movie, excellent effects, good plot/story...just pissed me off at the end when it becomes evident of more movies to come

Beren - I'd read the books a couple of years back so I knew what to expect. I didn't remember the entire plot so I was able to enjoy the story. I thought it was pretty well done. Gorgeous film work.

I think eragon was funniest at that: they made it obvious they were going to make another movie, and then they never did because the first one flopped so badly.
The'll probably make the second golden compass book into a movie though. I think it did pretty well.
I did read the book, and it made the movie so much less good, because it's like harry potter, they tried to shove a lot of book in to a little movie, and all the greatness is lost.
Like the iorec fight, that was a momentus occurance, but in the movie, it was like bang bang, it's over I win.
Movies just don't seem to cut it anymore.

Anyone see I Am Legend or National Treasure2, yet?

And - it may have been hokey a bit, but I still really like Eragon.  Reminded me of that older one with Peter McNickol...damn, i forget the name....

Sweeny was pretty good, but it didn't touch the original show. On the plus side, most of the parts were very well acted, the music was beautifully done by Paul Gemigniani who musical directed many Sondheim musicals. And they did not screw around with the original show too much. On the down side, it was excessively, entirely unnecessarily bloody. And where they did change things or omit certain things, the changes were either a liability or at best no improvement. Luckily the changes were fairly few (around 20% or so). The other significant problem is that the characters were played way too straight, for example the judge and beadle are just regular villians, but they are supposed to be much more than that, they are supposed to be more than a little insane.
All the characters are supposed to be a little nuts. Toby comes across as an ordinary young kid in the movie, but he is supposed to be messed up in the head.. maybe a little retarded. Helena Bonham Carter was miscast as Mrs Lovett.

But all complaining aside it was still pretty good.

We saw National Treasure 2 -- I liked it but I think the first one had a much more complex plot...

The movie isn't a parody.

It's a horror comedy.
