waterworld - wow. hadn't thought of that movie in years. Worst waste of money I've ever seen outside of politics.

"Hey, I know, lets take a lot of expensive sets, put them in water, and explode them."

"Well, how will we finance that?"

"We'll put the weakest possible plot to it and call it a movie!"

my mother (for some reason) went to see it in the theatre and her only comment was: there was so much water around, why was everyone so dirty?

I hated independance day for almost the same reasons.  I hated the fact that Will Smith's character was able to know how to opperate an alien spaceship.  Ugh.  this was the same reason that I didn't like the Wizard of Oz.  (OZ not Aahz)  I never understood how a young girl after getting caught in a tornado, flung in her house into an alternate universe, watching perhaps everyone she knows die, she then lands on and kills a lady, gets harrased by dwarves and a fairy, meets animated intelligent straw, metal, and a lion that talks, trees that talk, monkeys that fly, and somehow breaks into perfectly coriagrafted song and dance and happily dances away to meet some strange old guy, who might take her home.  Not to mention that strange image of a munchkin commiting suicide.  It's there! [Groo points and says it at you in a Lewis Black kinda way]

Independence day had some good fun dialog. The Wizard of Oz was a musical. Musicals aren't supposed to make sense. Plus it's about magic and stuff.

Waterworld only had the stuff going kaboom in it.

But hey, my aunt hated Shawshank Redemption (one of my all-time favorites) because she works in a prison and it was clear to her that he wouldn't have been allowed a poster on his wall.

To each his/her/its own.

It helps, perhaps, to understand that The Wizard of Oz (at least the movie) primarily takes place within a little girl's dream.

that in full form.

That reminds me of the Evil Dead musical.  I-i-i just don't know what to say about that.  It's just wrong in so many ways.

Subject: This might be a messy read. I go all over the place, chaotic thoughts

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Actualy, I always figured that even a dream would be horrifiying enough.  Then when I got older and read the books when I was in 5th grade (my teacher got me into the Wizard of Oz books because every last period on friday he would read them to us.  Got through a few of the books like the 2cd to 5th of the series.) and I figured that it was real and not a dream after all.  And as she is in Oz she doesn't think it is a dream.  If we were to go by the books, as well as the hindsight of knowing that she wasn't sleeping after all it makes even less sense.

Odd, I never read the Wizard of Oz, just the books after the first, because I've seen the original one like a Godzillion times on TV durring the hollidays I didn't think I needed to read the book itself.  How much song and dance was in the book?  Or was that just mostly for the movies?  They should remake the Wizard of Oz and the other books as well.  I mean it will piss off some people, but honestly until I get an appology for The Kevin Costner Robin Hood writen in the blood of seventeen holywood executives virgin daughters, I could care less.

Although if I had my choice of fantasy movie to make it would be the Elric Saga.  The books were awsome and if they got Terry Gilliam to produce and direct it, it would be perfect!  <- Just needed to get that off my chest.  <Groo takes a breath>

Tim Burton redid Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and it's apparently closer to the book than the Gene Wilder one (e.g. they had a squirrel room rather than a golden goose room).
