I don't think so.
And your box may already have been hacked.
Meh, for the few times I boot to the Windows side, or start my virtual machine I don't feel overly threatened. No data of importance is kept there.
Heh. They're not upgrading server versions, but W7 Pro is definitely on the free-upgrade path.

Server is a different story altogether. The same people who lambasted Linux by complaining that it "takes you back to the command line" are moving aggressively towards everything being configured from PowerHell. If you want the GUI you will eventually have to run RSAT on a remote desktop.
Of course, PowerHell is nowhere near as intuitive as a Linux command line.
Even the Windows admins I know say that.
Server is also questionable as to M$'$ motives with regard to Office 365.
They are pretty clear about [A[A[A
not promising support for hybrid environments (on-premises and cloud together) beyond the next version. This seems to imply that they want as many customers as possible fully migrated onto their cloud. Micro$oft has a serious case of Google envy.
well, in this case its rather amazon envy.
From all of those cloud providers you can get a free trial with computing time... except for the most established one: amazon.
that's not a cloud. that's thinly-veiled subscription-based licensing. And it sucks.
Of course. Why sell once what you can sell over and over again forever? That's the dark and dirty side of "Teh Clu0d" (tm). And they still sold you a Windows license!
So ... Windoze 10 and its already-earned reputation for constantly spying on you and sending your keystrokes, browsing habits, microphone and camera data, etc. back to the mothership.
Overblown? Real? Somewhere in between?
There's a third party app to disable all of the spying but it pays for itself by inserting ads into every program you open. Wow.
Others seem to be blacklisting DNS entries, but that probably blocks updates...
Supposedly, you can opt out of that stuff, but also supposedly it limits what Windows 10 can do for you. Heh.
"Windows 10: aka you WILL use Bing and Azure whether you want to or not!

You can completely uninstall Cortana - but since it's integrated with search this effectively breaks the desktop search engine.
Open a powershell window as administrator
Get-AppxPackage -Name Microsoft.Windows.Cortana | Select PackageFullName
It'll give you the fullname of the cortana package. Mine gives "Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_18.104.22.168_neutral_neutral_cw5n1h2txyewy"
So then remove it with
That should be it.

If enough people want the windows classic shell, somebody will write
it, same as they did for all the pseudo-start-menus for 8 and 8.1. Some
of those were actually good.
Why did anyone need to make classic shells for Windows? The average Windows user doesn't even know what version they're running, and people who know what they're doing with computers don't need the program because they're not even using Windows.
maintaining the windows port of ArangoDB which I do via rdesktop on a server 8 something whatever, I installed a startmenu since I was fed up with the bullshit.
However, I prefer to use ssh to work with the wintendo. Even better, automated shit, so jenkins will do it for me.

The "classic" shells I have seen for Windows don't get nearly classic enough for my tastes. My favorite Windows UI was still the simple, spatial Explorer layout of NT4 and Windows 95. It was still usable up through Windows 2000 but who decided that we needed to take all the toolbars and sidebars and UI trash that used to clutter browsers and move them into the once-minimalistic and efficient file explorer windows?
I thought "classic shells" was a Kraft mac n' cheese product.

The user interface of Windows was at its best when it was pretty much a direct clone of RISC OS. (You didn't think Microsoft actually created something that good themselves, did you?)
Ever since then, every release of Windows has been designed to railroad its users into using other Microsoft products and services ... Internet Explorer, Bing, Office 365, Bing, Microsoft Cloud, and have I mentioned Bing?
Microsoft's desire to use the operating system as a vehicle to drive people into their other offerings is in direct conflict with the fact that people really want the operating system to just launch programs and get out of the way.
I hear that Windows 10 can be turned into a Chrome OS workalike pretty easily.
Chrome browser running on a machine with Windows 8, 8.1, or 10, when hardware video acceleration is available, can be run in "Windows 8 mode" where it turns itself into a Metro application that looks exactly like Chrome OS, when you set it as your default browser. Combine that with the fact that Windows can be set to lock a user into running only one Metro application at startup, and you get a sort of Chrome OS equivalent.
yeah, that is kinda like what Google and Facebook are doing now. Making you use their products and their products only.
while facebook does that by simply stealing their time. (ever heard of the grey Mr. guys and momo?)
This is politics but it's also *genuine* Microsoft bashing.

Bernie Sanders is suspicious that Microsoft's involvement in computerized tallying of votes in the Iowa caucuses is programmed to bias the results to make Hitlery Cunton the winner.
Considering that Microsoft is the world's most evil company, founded by the worst person in all of recorded history, I can't dismiss this, even coming from a communist kook like San-duh-rs.
The thing is, if Microsoft is rigging the Iowa caucuses to make Hitlery Cunton win, that means they've probably programmed Microsoft Election Rigger 2016 to screw Sanders (who I don't care about) *and* Trump (who I do care about).
WHY CAN'T BILL GATES DIE ALREADY!!!!
The cry in 2004 was "those evil republican voting machine DIEBOLD! DIEBOLD!!!!" "They donated to the republicans!!!!1!!!!!!" I though Gates was getting more socialist as he got older, he should want Sanders. Where ever there is voting, there will be people screaming fraud, and then there is the actual fraud, and then it doesn't mater.
Even if he does win, if he wins...HAH! Even if he wins! Even if he plays so far above our heads that our noses bleed for a week to ten days; even if God in Heaven above comes down and points his hand at Bernie's side of the field; even if every man, woman and child held hands together and prayed for Bernie to win, it just wouldn't matter because all the really good looking girls would still go out with the guys from Mohawk because they've got all the money! It just doesn't matter if we win or we lose. IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER!
