Yeah, tempting, but I'm in a hurry, and I suspect the changes required might be beyond what they're interested in handling.

They queue up all the work required, then kick off the work at one time... probably to help make it more robust.  Problem is, by taking this approach, if you have a folder with too many sub-folders and lots of files, the server chugs along until it can't handle anymore (runs out of memory, I presume), before it simply dies with an error message.  That's fundamentally fucked up for what we need.

Also, if you erase all the files/folders within one of the machines, it will refuse to do any work at all until you restore the files somehow, or until you remove the .unison folder.  Even when you use their command to make the thing act like a mirroring tool instead of a synchronization tool, it fails to do what you ask.  I can't work around this problem at all, although it shouldn't be a problem for me if everything goes alright.

I do hope I can fix some of that for them, but I don't have the time right now.

Steve Ballmer seems to be getting really worried about Apple these days....

When the economy is down, the gloves come off, and we’ve always suspected Steve Ballmer harbored deep-seated grudges about the perceived value of a partially-eaten apple.  The Microsoft CEO struck out at Apple during a conference in New York this week, describing the company’s products as “$500 more to get a logo”.

“Apple gained about one point, but now I think the tide has really turned back the other direction.  The economy is helpful. Paying an extra $500 for a computer in this environment — same piece of hardware — paying $500 more to get a logo on it? I think that’s a more challenging proposition for the average person than it used to be” Steve Ballmer, CEO, Microsoft

Of course, people might be buying Apple more so as not to have to use your fucked-up Windows system, Ballmer - think about that? Hmm?

Monkey Boy always talks a good game. Apple will do just fine.

The part that he's not telling you about, though, is that the down economy is hurting Microsoft's business vs. Linux. IDC surveyed 330 IT managers -- 65 percent admitted to increasing Linux server workloads by 10 percent or more, and 63 percent said they plan to increase Linux desktop usage by 10 percent or more this year.

When you're cutting corners and stretching every dollar, it's hard to beat free.

Didn't MS give apple a ton of money a few years ago?

I tried to pitch some mysql to get away from buying more hardware to make solaris work better.

Then they priced it out and found out it was going to cost $1,000,000 extra a year with the machine, support and new license for sybase.
So I think I'm going to get my mysql, but it's on the backburner for now.

Oh oh.  I'm gonna have to do some checking at work now.  I bet our Windows 2000 box is hosed up now.  We are heavily dependent on this box running scripts at specific times.

This is dumb. According to this, windows 7 isn't bad because it isn't any worse than vista.
I don't get it.
The problem with vista (one of many) is that it breaks a lot of software and use of hardware.
But if the same changes made for vista are in windows 7, then you're going to have the same problems. How is this any better?

Windows 7 is better than Vista because it's not called Vista. That's the approach, anyway. The name is tarnished and they have to get away from it quickly. Kind of like New Coke.

My boss finally agreed that Vista sucks, by sending me a public apology.
This was rather amusing.

Good, now with that out of the way you can begin convincing him that Windows 7 sucks.

Lets take a break from M$ and focus on a piece of software which is even more painful to use.

So, I'm an engineering student, first year to be exact, so nothing fancy. The tool of the trade for math stuff here is matlab, which requires 'activation'. I went and bought a copy for $110AUD so I didn't have to find a spare computer in a lab to do my work. (At least that $110 wasn't my own)

A few days ago I gave my system a well deserved wipe and reformat.

So I go to reinstall matlab, it asks me to reactivate it. Ok.

Except it says that my serial is already in use, ok, and MathWorks have no record of my previous activation so I can't 'release' it, so I have to wait around until next week when someone at MathWorks bothers to respond to a support ticket!

In the mean time I'm getting acquainted (again) with Octave. Annoyingly, the function set isn't the same (i.e ode23/45/etc in matlab vs lsode, and some other nuances) so can't easily share work around in class with mates, but it does the job.

Our CIO forced the entire Helpdesk and top level support services groups into Vista.  Busted most of our administative tools, which pushed us into using vm ware to run XP or 2003 server to get our tools back...  Well, when he got his new computer w/ Vista, he hated it so much he retracted and now we are upgradeing all of our computers back to XP.  No public apology though. :(

Vista:

"5 seconds remaining..."

[ ten minutes later ]

"5 seconds remaining..."

That has been the Vista experience for me, much of the time.
