Windows will always suck because Microsoft's business needs supersede building a better product.

From the news wire...

"WASHINGTON (AP) - Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) Chairman Bill Gates said Thursday
he expects the next decade to bring even greater technological leaps than
the past 10 years.

In a speech to the Northern Virginia Technology Council, Gates speculated
that some of the most important advances will come in the ways people
interact with computers: speech-recognition technology, tablets that will
recognize handwriting and touch-screen surfaces that will integrate a wide
variety of information."

What's funny is that Gates says that these things will materialize over the
next ten years ... but he's been saying this *for* at least ten years.

Gates still seems to have this fantasy of everyone having a Star Trek type
computer. Perhaps it'll happen someday -- if someone other than Microsoft
develops the technology :)

He seems to share Disney's style of having a vision of the future
remains completely static for decades, even when the present technology is
changing around it.

"Okay... hold on... Okay the dell scren just went away, do I press F8 now? Wait... now it's loading windows... I missed it didn't I?"

Microsoft is, in fact, trying to get into the VoIP business.

"Microsoft VoIP. Because your phones should be as reliable as your Exchange server."

Probably not, aside from some inbox integration and things like that. From what I've heard, they have a lot of trouble keeping Exchange from collapsing as it is. That's why SharePoint exists. Those features were supposed to go into Exchange but the code base was just too fragile.

Subject: Microsoft Brand In Sharp Decline

You know what. The problem, if you want to call it that, is that there's no large branded company to take the place of microsoft.
There's no sun, or apple , or HP, or dell lvel company that can/is willing/has the ability to compete with MS.
So even if they fall quickly, they have a long way to fall, and nobody to step in and take over.

The article is about brand power, not market share. According to the article, Microsoft went from the #12 most powerful brand to #56 in just one year. Strictly inside the computer sector, they are currently #2 (behind IBM) and about to be overtaken by Toshiba.

Yes, Microsoft has a long way to fall. The point is that they are indeed falling. With any luck they will not be replaced by another monopolist, but rather by a level playing field.

Considering how many people in your line of work have been replaced by cheap foreign labor, a level playing field would probably be an improvement.
