No matter how it works out, I give Apple a lot of credit for trying to make a really good "smart" phone. So many other phones exist which have these same features. For example, my Treo has internet access (EVDO, faster than the iPhone), it has a real web browser, it has email, google maps, a nice directory, a music player with flash memory, pda functions, a photo library, camera... But what it looks like Apple is trying to do is to actually make something where all that stuff actually works really well. On my phone, which is one of the better ones, there's still all kinds of BS. Even something like adding a number to your phonebook after somebody calls you can be a pain in the ass. Some places where you have a number, you can dial it but not add it to your phone book.. or whatever. Attachments in the web browser and email aren't handled too well, and it's inconsistent. It's just got all these gaping UI issues that could be easily worked out but never were.
With the iPhone I think they are trying to make something better organized.
Also, thanks to Apple for forcing Cingular to provide an API for visually working with your voice mail and streaming your voice mail.. something that should have been done years ago.. and now that the ice has been broken, eventually everyone will have it. It took a company like Apple to convince the phone company to make that kind of change...

fine, credit to apple for trying good design, let's face it that was always their game, and everything else was designed by geeks and it shows.
the lack of seamlessness in the treo is just bad management, somebody threw the budget money at the wrong department. You can show off features and it sells the pointy haired bosses, but you can't say "I'm selling a really sexy product." and nobody but apple a)gets it or b)puts their money where the sex is.
That said, apple isn't all roses, they're just leages ahead of everybody else because they actually try.
As for SMS, what do they need sms for? you should be sending email. :-)
What I'm really amazed at is that AT&T got their shit together enough to make it work at all, but then again, it's cingular not at&t at large.

Got my iPhone.

So far, I'm pissed off. It's not a real GSM phone in that you can't just pop your SIM chip in.

Plus you've got to active the damn thing through itunes. And it has to be the lates version of OSX, and iTunes. A new phone, and I'm updating my computer.

Still holding.

yes. i own a dead fingerworks keyboard, that i can't get an replacement for due to the iphone. i don't think thats worth it.

on the openmoko...

its german (some of the initators are german...) fic as firmed out a mostly independant openmoko group.

i've played with one on linuxtag, and it rocks!

it's got an allmost 300 dpi display, (640x480) that by hardware can half the resolution for example video playback.

and it's all open. you get specs for every single part of it without signing an nda.

no reverse engeneering htc devices. you even can buy a jtag for it to de-brick it if you screwed it.

it's going to have the sensors like a wii-mote... i think thats going to get fun. when the consumer device is here, i want one.

Well, I returned the iphone.

Apple / Cingular / AT&T's agreement excludes business accounts. I could not take my business phone number and transfer it to the phone.

And the fucking asshole in the Apple store (they were open until midnight) had the nerve to try and charge me a restocking fee, and said I should have done my research better! The nerve, especially when I asked three separate employees in the store before buying the damned thing.

While it's not going to do anything, I'm writing a nasty letter to Jobs.

Unlocked phones that you can slide your own SIM card into are better.

I'll let you know when OpenMoko phones become available. :)

I'm told the SIM card is buried somewhere inside the phone and requires significant disassembly to get at.

Can anyone here say "Overrated"?

Apple used to be a great manufacturer. Now they're geared towards producing
consumer-level shit. Quite unfortunate.

I miss my iBook.

I can't say that I agree Animal... My current MacBook Pro is a great piece....
And I have to say the same about my other Mac's.

What makes your current notebook shit?

Slow overall. OS is bloated to shit.

When I reboot I have to do it 3-4 times before bluetooth and wireless are both
recognized by the system and turn on.

Runs hot. This fan is almost always on. I think my iBook's fan turned on 4
times the entire time I owned it.

Battery life sucks. I think it's related to the incredible amount of heat this
thing produces.
