Do not mock the One True Editor. The day of reckoning shall arrive and all your files will be burned up in /dev/null .

Well, there were a few hiccups and burps, implementing the new DSL connection, but it looks like we're all set, now.

*urp* Sorry, one more burp.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being "regret the decision", what's your first impression of DSL service?

So far, so good.

Going with 9, to this point, as there were some snafus...but those were really in the order processing part, not the service, to this point.

ditto. been on speakeasy dsl since september. it's been terrific. more reliable than the comcast cable service I had back in jersey. better upload speed. I can stream my mp3 collection at home to my desktop at work. lovely.

I'd love to stream my ogg collection, but work's firewall/proxy system blocks Winamp, etc.

I use slimserver. It's free, perl, and you could stream over any port you like.

I'm not worried about how to do it...I've got Icecast and ices running.

It's not even a port issue. SBC's proxy server (it's the only way that 99% of the corprate network can get out to the net) is configured to look for an application's name/ID, and blocks outbound connections. I can point my web browser at the port, and get the necessary garbage...but if I point Winamp, or a number of other media players there, I get bupkus.

Mmm, SlimServer you say, Slim Devices, too...very interesting. This is

going on the list of things to buy. Just a notch or two below the entry marked "a house".

the slimserver app is free. works great. I create a ssh tunnel and stream over that. encrypted mp3s. I feel the geek vibe running strongly through me.

I've had dsl since '99 but this last move within my providers area was a nightmare. Gave them advance notice and was still down almost 3 weeks for a 2 block move. And they couldn't give me the same static ip...

You're kidding me? Do they assign the IPs through some sort of authentication method, or straight up?
