Spent a short while in Germany. It was pronounced something like luf-en-brow. Good beer indeed; although I actually liked Dortmunder Union better. I was introduced to that in Frankfurt. And I will always cherish having been able to get hold of *real* UZO. Good stuff! Too bad for those in the US that get the sanitized version only; courtesy of the DEA.

I remember once in Munich at a restaurant I kept asking for WeissBier and I wanted Dunkel. Each time I kept asking for Dunkel. Finally, one of the other people at the table (whom I didn't know, it was a shared table) tole me "It is dark". I felt kind of stupid.
2Dog: I've served alot of UZO here (in the US). What's different about it outside the US?

Is it? Beats me. I'm pretty good with English but that's about it.

Ordering Dunkel Weissbeir seemed to do the trick in Germany without any problem (except when it already was and I didn't know it).

"weissbeir" is obvious, "white beer" but Dinkle Acker is a well-known brand of beer in Germany, quite good too. Maybe there is a Dunkle also. There are hundreds of breweries and I have yet to sample them all.

But I'm trying each time I visit!

The barkeeps get a kick out of my terrible German telling them to set me up with a small glass of every brew in the house, lightest first. Best thing about many pubs in Germany is that they also have rooms upstairs or nearby so I needn't drive back to a hotel.

Heh.  I've had some Fernweiser.  Even had a few bottles explode during fermentation.  :)  Small glass rockets.  lol

I remember that from childhood. My grandfather brewed and sometimes during warm summer nights when his stock cooled quickly we'd hear a "pop!" Almost always followed by a 2nd or 3rd explosion.

Got so drunk one night in Frankfort that the lady bartender and I got terribly ripped. So badly that she had to help me upstairs to one of their rental rooms. In the morning I woke up to find both of us flat on our backs, fully dressed, perpendicular to the bed with the pillows and bedcover still in place.

Frankfort is almost as good as Munich for beer drinkers plus they have the advantage of white wine.
