you know what I have a problem with that really seems broken to me?
ubuntu sets up /etc/cron.[hourly|daily|monthly|weekly...] and runs a script to fire off everything in the directory at the predetermined time.
But only if the filename doesn't have a . in it.
That took me HOURS to figure out, and then when Ir ealized the trick was to remove the dots from the name, I set it up and it STILL doesn't work, so I gave up and made a normal cron entry.

Are you looking to play just music, or music plus video?

If you're running Ubuntu then you already have Totem (it's labeled "Movie Player" in the menu). Despite the name it does rather nicely playing music as well.

One thing I liked about iTunes was that there were SHITLOADS of music stations just there. I didn't have to go looking for them. Not so with rhythmbox. I'll check out the other suggestions.

fleeb- when are you going to get down here and tell me everything I did wrong?

You can find shitloads of music stations through the thing I linked.  They also include for-pay stations if you want to go down that road.

I'll send you an e-mail about when I have some time free.  I'm still kind of hoping my plans can change.. this isn't going to be an ideal Christmas.

Not sure where he's trying to go with this. He didn't say anything we didn't already know. You can't sell open source software because open source moves the value somewhere other than the software itself ... DUH! Thanks for bringing us that insightful news! We wouldn't have figured that our for ourselves ... oh wait, we already did figure it out a decade ago!

It's amazing that people get paid to write stuff like that.

No it's not amazing. It's business.
People will pay money for just about anything.
The trick is to take a risk in trying to sell something new and make a quick buck off people who buy the stuff who don't know better.

It helps if you use a pseudonym when you write crap like that.

fuck gconv.

ekiga keeps secrets in there. and you start using gconv-edit and lookup special keys to tune it.

It definitely wanted to do STUN, but it definitely wasn't neccesary and giving me trouble...

the only way to turn it off was to hack it with gconv-edit.

else I wouldn't be able to hear inbound calls.

Of course gconf is registry-like. Did you expect that Microsoft employee Miguel de Icaza would have it any other way?

Just figured something out ... if you occasionally get "We're sorry, this video is no longer available" on YouTube, and you were using a beta of Flash 10, update your player. The non-beta version handles high-resolution YouTube just fine.

That one was a bit of a head-scratcher for a while there. I blame Microsoft.

I'm not sure what YouTube is doing nowadays with H.264 video ... for a lot of the newer videos they seem to have both standard-quality (FLV) and high-quality (H.264) versions available. It may be that some of the newest videos are only in H.264, which would exclude Flash 8, because they added H.264 in Flash 9.

What I do know is that H.264 looks great, and is obviously here to stay, so I'm thinking that maybe that'll be the format that I finally archive my home videos in. I
ve been putting that off for a while. Being able to use the same files for archival *and* an "IG Tube" web site would be a big plus.
