umm dumb question, all you guys using ace, is it acedsl or acescape?
I signed up for acedsl but I'm not sure which one it is.
the one with the static ip that I can run servers on is what I'm going for.

umm... well as for mail what I did was I have my dads' machine (ace) as a backup mx, so my mail ended up going there and since I wrote the mail system he's running, apparently I thought of this, it routes my mail on his machine to my machine. of course it failed, so it keeps trying for 3-5 days something like that.
so I just told his machine tht I now live on port 1125 instead of 25 and it all gets to me still, but this is going to be temporary, I don't like relying on my dad's machine for mail, he tends to reboot it willy niilly.

OK, so Qwest left. I guess they repaired the static, but there's still an annoying hum on the line, and my DSL is STILL obnoxiously slow. I think it's time to yell and scream some. Then call them back.

Ford: the company is called Acecape, the service is called AceDSL. You are more likely to be eligible for service if you have a friend at the phone company "re-evaluate" your loop. :)

Oops, scratch that, I see that they calculated your loop length at 16300 feet and you've already placed an order. :) Enjoy. You'll love their service.

Wish me luck. Heh.

Acecape is the company acedsl is the product. It doesn't matter which bandwidth level you buy, they all have static IP's and all allow servers.

gotchya, well I couldn't get dsl a few years ago because "your pole outside has been hit by lightning one too many times."
And they haven't replaced the coil, but I figure I haven't tried in a while so I thought I'd see how it went this time.

I want a Qworst technician's head on a stick. The assholes came and went before I even got home from work today, and didn't apparently do much of anything.
There's STILL an annoying buzz on the line, though perversely my DSL connection is now running fast again (just tested a 10MB download and averaging 120KB/sec; upload test averages 76KB/sec).

I think I'm just going to leave it alone until it rains and the buzz gets LOUD and un-ignorable, which should be tomorrow.

Looks like my 3 MBPS DSL line is going good. I seem to get about 2.6 MBPS on speed tests but some downloads peak at 400k/sec.

ENVY ME!

I just want to remind everybody that I'm getting those speeds (120KB/sec down, 76KB/sec up) at 16850 feet. This means that Verizon sucks.

Get out of here with that crippled cable crap. That much bandwidth is useless with all the restrictions they put on it.

Ford, I have AceDSL "Live" which is 768/128. They actually don't offer it anymore, I can upgrade for nothing to 1600/128. My loop is allegedly 3000 feet so it shouldn't be too much of a problem. But if I were you I would get the SOHO level service, it's only $10 more ($59.99) and gives you 384 down instead of 128. In reality my down speed is more like 90-100 and it's getting really annoying for certain things like for example VPN use. So I'm tempted. But I want to move soon so I'm trying to avoid upsetting things.
Everything has been steady and I'd rather it stayed that way than to have fast but unreliable service for the few months before I move... But if I were you I'd go for the 1600/384.

IO, the only restriction, which has been recent, is blocking of port 25 (a number of other ISPs also block port 25, as I found out while investigating). I can run P2P software as long as I don't allow full-throttle uploads.

Nite*Star: Take a look at your AUP. There's a lot more in the way of restrictions than they might have actually put in place

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Yeah, it's real insidious. They'll prohibit you from running servers in the AUP, but then not block incoming services. They get annoyed with you, SMACK, out goes your cable modem, and it ain't coming back.

Well, the freaking BUZZ on my line has gotten LOUDER, and my DSL has gotten SLOWER. I despair of calling Qwest at this point.
