Plenty of time to catch up. That is, if someone doesn't "zap" the wires first.

Connect to one of your neighbors' wireless then!

It's kind of funny ... I thought I was the only one in our neighborhood with wireless. Turns out I just had a crappy wireless card. Now that I've got a laptop with good quality built-in wireless, I can pick up half a dozen different networks (several of which are not encrypted).

I'll still leave mine unencrypted for now, though. I just don't see a threat.

I've found a number of wireless networks in my condominium.

Some of them are completely open, too.

I prefer to use my own, though.  And to keep mine secured.

I had my wifi open for a little while here, but people abused it so I had to close it. Actually even after I added WEP, people were cracking my key and using it for P2P, and I got warned for sharing some stuff I never heard of... So I put a MAC filter in place.

i believe that all of my neighbors have cable, since we can't get dsl. and they're not nearly as smart as pete's neighbors. like fleeb, i prefer to use my own and keep it secured. though i think i should talk to my next door neighbor about it some time, since he also keeps his secure and i'm sure he has the same problem of not picking up his wireless across his whole apartment.

we solve the problem by just using it wired upstairs.

My building is full of Generation Y loft-dwelling types who can afford PowerBooks and drugs, and lots of beer.. but apparently not DSL.

Funny you can't get DSL.. we can't get cable in our building. Well, the first floor can get commercial cable but they won't run it to the second floor, even though the cable physically runs on the outside wall directly between the first and second floor windows... The distance to the CO makes DSL a little sketchy but it does work.

But just yesterday I saw a bunch of coax being run through the wall of the building on my floor.. it is possible that cable is arriving. Or maybe it's a video intercom.. the building is really due for a new intercom... Anyway on one hand I'm happy, on the other hand, we just got Dish Network and we're happy with it, and the DSL is pretty good. I'm not sure it's worth changing at this point.

I think mine's the best.
Totally open, no security. However.....
....unless your MAC addy matches the one in my computers, all you're going to
be able to see is Every other packet gets dropped.

I'm using encryption and MAC addy filtering, at my WAP.

One of my neighbors...well, he's clear across the neighborhood...has his network wide open. When I bought my new laptop, before I could get the profile configured for my own network, it found and connected to his.

Given the distance, I was more than just a little surprised.

I have the hardest time convincing library users that no, they cannot pickup our signal 2.5 miles away, or farther! You'd be lucky to get a decent signal sitting in our parking lot.

Just because it's listed in your network list doesn't mean it's currently active.

PowerBooks, drugs and beer are covered by student loans. DSL, it seems, is not.

pp: time warner is supposedly upgrading brooklyn (or so they claimed when our cable went out from midnight to 6am the other night) so maybe those new cable bundles are really cable.

i don't know what the deal with the dsl is. it might be that the copper is too crappy. i bet if i were north of grand st... (stops to wonder if pp's neighbors buy drugs from the building next door)

i wonder if i was suffering from an upgrade earlier.

More to the point: powerbooks and drugs are things you can buy and don't have to sign up for.

Speaking of dsl issues.
I have a friend who I email a lot but rarely call.
well I called them yesterday and apparently they have vonage.
you know how I can tell? My friend on the other end of the line says "we have fucking vonage and it always cuts out and nobody can ever hear what I'm saying, we're getting rid of it.
It was one of the more anoying phone calls I've ever been on because it quantized out (if that makes any sense) every 2-3 seconds, and I had to keep asking them to repeat themselves in the hopes that I could get enough words of the sentance to make sense of what they were trying to say.
Yay progress.
