Hey, I didn't know you were upgrading your electric service. Did they

replace that ancient breaker panel you had in there too?

I have a dream.

Well, I finally brought in someone with a pipe camera. Very very cool. I want one. :)

Unfortunately we discovered that our lovely cast iron sewer main switches over to clay pipe as soon as it exits the house. And that pipe is broken in three different places. It's in bad enough shape that it isn't relinable, either.

The good news is that we can abandon the line altogether and set up a new pipe that exits the house via a different route, eliminating the need to tear up my brick patio and concrete steps. By exiting the house in a different location, *most* of the trenching will be eliminated, and we'll come out of the house about five feet away from the septic tank.

It's still going to be an expensive job, though. Anyone here in Uncensoredland know a good plumber?

I knew a good plumber but he doesn't return my calls anymore.
I can ask my A/C guy he's got lots of friends.

More drama today. :(

My wife called and said that a tree limb fell down in our driveway and knocked out the power line. This seemed odd because she said "the lights went out but the air conditioner is still running." I'm able to see my home network from the office, and the server was still pingable.

Sure enough, the fallen tree limb had taken out one leg of the split-phase power cable, plus the neutral. The air conditioner and my server rack were on the remaining leg, with the circuit being completed through the water main (and our neighbor's, I guess).

Here's where we discover that Con Edison really has it in for Ford. Not only are they dragging him across the coals with his electric service upgrade, but they sent to me the BEST CON ED GUY EVER!!! He could have just disconnected the service at the pole and then said "ok, call us again when you've got the tree removed" but instead he helped me figure out what was wrong with a chainsaw that I had BORROWED FROM FORD and then helped dismantle the part of the tree that was in the driveway. (Sorry Ford, there really is something wrong with your chainsaw -- Con Ed confirms it!)

After putting the aerial cable back onto the house, he then helped pin up the cable to the meter, and even hung the weatherhead back up on the house, which is definitely out of scope. So instead of multiple Con Ed visits plus an expensive electrician, we had our electricity fully restored in less than two hours and it didn't cost anything. (I did slip the guy a few bucks because he was way more helpful than he had to be, but that doesn't count as real expense.)

Now I've got a tree problem. This is the second time this month, and the third time this year, that this tree has dropped perfectly healthy limbs on the ground. Full of leaves, no rot, no obvious disease. The guy from Con Ed suggested that the tree was probably hit by lightning which, in his words, "took the pepper out of it" (I just love Pennsylvania Dutch euphemisms) and now the tree is shedding limbs in an attempt to stay alive.

Between the tree removal that we're going to have to do, and the sewer main replacement (septic, actually, but they still call it a sewer main) this is going to turn out to be an insanely expensive summer.

Did you get his personal cell number so I can call him instead of con ed?

Did he have a reasonable diagnosis of my chainsaw problems?

IG, if the tree is in a safe place, why not let it do what nature intended?

Very simple, in fact: the mechanism that keeps the bar and chain lubricated, isn't working. We had to manually oil it. And the chain is dull.

It isn't in a safe place. Both of the limbs that have come down so far looked perfectly healthy before they dropped. We've been lucky. The first one was a mere nuisance; the second one just took down some wires. The next one could hit a car or a person.

It was working. If you run the chainsaw near the ground it should make a shpritz line on the floor. It did about a week or two before when I had tried it. Oh wlel.

If I can show that in fact th echainsaw is working, it would once again prove the incompetence of the con ed guy. Hmmm....
But yeah, the chain is probably dull. :-)

Looking forward to it. :)

Of course, it could have just been me being incompetent -- is there a control that you have to use to activate lubrication, and I just wasn't paying attention when you told me about it?
