O.k. (and I post this in a lighthearted way) It's time to get out the ol' cliche book.
*Flips thru the pages* *Aah, here it is*
"If you wan't something done right, do it yourself."

2Dog - it's a good theory, but sometimes 1. you don't have the time/energy/physical strength. 2. you don't have the know-how 3. you don't have the tools.

What was great about the washing machine was that all I was missing was know-how, and the guy was able to supply that over the phone.

But, for example, I have bars outside my windows that need to be painted. My husband could do it, but he earns X per hour. We could hire someone to do it for 1/2 or 1/3X per hour.  The person might do it slightly slower than my husband would, or might do it less well. On the other hand, it'll be done and it won't take away from the precious time my husband and I have together (he's out of the house 50 hours a week for work -including commutes and he sleeps 8.5-9 hours per night).

I could do the bars but, 1. I tire out quickly 2. It's not good for the baby for me to be breathing paint fumes.

Well said, Tril. I'm lucky though - my father-in-law is a really nice guy and we get along well and he's good at "home" stuff like plumbing. :-)

It has been said that there are three ways to get something done:

1. Do it yourself
2. Hire someone to do it
3. Forbid your kids to do it

Walter, my father-in-law, is actually an around-the-house jack of all trades, but is most experienced, as far as I know, in the plumbing area.

Very handy. :-)

We're supposed to be building a custom home for Ginger and I to live in soon. I imagine I will learn a lot from him, even if I only just stand there and watch what he is doing.

Of course that's becausd it's human nature to assume that you are always right and everybody else is wrong.
It just goes without saying most of the time.

If I want it done right I do it myself. Because then I know it's going to be done
the right way. And even if I break something, I have only myself to blame. No excuses.
If I hire somebody to do something (like some contractor work) I make sure I am on site
and can supervise. No, I do not breathe down their necks; that would be uncool (no pun)
But mostly (read-always) when I can find the time I do it myself. If you want it done right .......
Just today while I was installing a indoor/outdoor ceiling fan under the roof over the cooking
area I had to UNDO and then REDO the wiring that we hired an electrician to do for us because
it was all fucked up! Unfortunately I was in San Antonio for a few days when he was up here
doing his *so called* work. No refund, no re-repair... too much time had elapsed.
Should've just done it myself in the first place and saved some money. *sigh*

at this point, if it involves bending down, I'd rather have it done wrong than do it myself.

Don't worry, I'm taking it as easy as I can. The thing is, I have another three months of this, so I can't just quit life...
