I hate grass. Well actually I hate it being mowed. I am allergic to mowed grass. Recently the mowing guy came by while we were out and we arrived home to this rather unpleasant sound and smell. We fled to a local restaurant and had dinner out rather than at home. Allergies suck.

Is "Fred" the guard dog? He looks too small to guard much at the puppy stage.

Ok, "Guard Dog-to-be"...

Spent the morning cutting firewood, lazing on the hillside with a puppy sleeping in your lap has to be one of the most tranquil moments in life.

I dumped another 5 bags of cement into the sinkhole yesterday. That's 16 bags of cement, that's 1280lbs. I hope the ground doesn't collapse :-)
the hole is now only about a foot or two deep, but now I have the side hole which is much wider to fill in.
The question of the day is... how much cement do you have to buy in bags at $3.90 a bag for 80lbs before it becomes cheaper to hire a guy with a truck to just come and dump cement in?
I have no idea how much the truck guys cost...

I guess it doesn't hurt anything to have a huge block of concrete under your driveway... but wouldn't it make more sense to fill it in with soil?

Soil settles. So can small rocks. Cement, once weteed and then dried, will not settle.

Ford - I can't do that complex of math anymore. And to think I once tutored Calculus in college. *heavy sigh*

If there's a sinkhole, it means that soil has already eroded away. If he added more soil, that would just erode away too. Concrete would be a bit more resilient.

Using concrete, he can be assured that the soil around the concrete will erode away instead of the concrete itself.

your driveway... but wouldn't it make more sense to fill it in with
soil?

apparently not, because whatever washed it away the first time, would probably just wash it away again. I wanted something that wouldn't wash away.
And then the obvious comes up: well, whatever is doing the washing, will just wash around it.
The answer to that I hope is that I will fix the washing away problem, because I think it's a drainage in my driveway problem. I hope.

Maybe you should have filled the sinkhole with that expanding foam stuff.
:)

I'm thinking he should use Silly Elastic Bubble Plastic.

So this morning the town of greenburgh showed up. the highway department, not sure why them, but the came, looked around and said "really far away from the curb, not our problem, but let's see..."
And they poked around and figured out nothing, then called one of their buddies in the water dept. 15 minutes later, he shows up and starts poking around.
They all agreed that it wasn't there problem whatever it was but I think they were fascinated by the all the weird drainage artifacts around my house, so they kept poking. THe only reason they left was because they had othe appointments they had to go to but they were interested in coming back. I don't think they will though, their curiousity wasn't that piqued.
THey did figure out one useful thing though.
I have a bunch of places where there are holes in the ground that seem to go nowhere. one guy managed to clean one out and got water running through it again and found that it runs to thiso ther drain that I never knew what it was for. So that's cool, I now have another working drain.
Didn't help with the sinkhole though.
But they're sure it's not their problem.

Hmmm...

I wonder if your sinkhole problem might find itself 'going away' if you addressed all those working drains.

If the water is not going through the drains originally available, it's probably making its own drain somehow... but not where you want it.
