I can't even imagine how one would attempt to make lasagna in a crock pot.

Take it from a genuine Italian ... if you don't have the time to make lasagna, don't fake it -- make a tray of baked ziti instead.

ah yes - my "fake"

I make spaghetti, melt cheese on top, and eat it with cottage cheese on the side. Better yet is when I can find the veggie "meatballs." For some unknown reason, many stores carry their veggie stuff (all the same brand) in every form except meatball. Quite annoying, really.

It's nothing like lasagne, but it helps with some of the same cravings.

(when you consider that I can't have it with meat anyway)

Why Tip?

“How do you feel about eliminating tipping?” he asked them.

Actually a good article.  Having friends in the resteraunt business, I can see how getting rid of the tip and moving to a service charge would be helpful for the staff.  As a customer, I would perfer to NOT see the "service charge" on the bill, be told not to tip, be given the option to donate, and have the food prices nudged up.  This would, of course, have to be at a "better" quality eatery.  (Red Lobster or Applebees isn't going to get away with adding 15% to their meal costs, but Bonefish Grill could.)  Places that routeinely trip over themself to give good service are going to get away with this easier then places that have a hard time getting their names right. ;)

I wouldn't mind an 18% service charge tacked on the bill, as in Europe. I don't think that was phase me at all.

I would prefer for waitstaff to be paid an appropriate salary like any other employee. Why should I, the customer, be in charge of the waiters paycheck?
If I am paying their wages then put me in charge of hiring and firing as well...

Waiters seem to like the current tipping system because it is very easy for them to lie on their tax returns about how much they earned in tips.

But, waiters bitch and complain with each other, jockeying over customers and other stuff, leading to a fucked up working environment where less emphasis is made over the quality of the service, rather than focusing on getting the tips.

And tipping doesn't seem to map to the quality of the service, as you'd expect.
Some people give nice tips for lousy service.

Problem with giving waitstaff real salaries is the transient nature of the job.
In america, being a server is considered a in-between job, or a temp job. In
Italy, being a waiter is a career. In europe, being a waiter is not seen as a
lower end job.

Heh, that might explain why some Americans get treated so badly in Paris.

If it's not a low-end job, but the arrogant American treats the staff in such a fashion...

Exactly. In Italy, waiter jobs pass from father to son. It's considered a fine
job.

I don't seem to run into those kinds of cultural distinctions often. But, I think that might be because I prefer to react to everyone with some measure of respect for their humanity. I'm not a very classist person.

There's no excuse for being disrespectful to someone because of the job they do. Not a waiter anyway. A DEA agent or a slumlord maybe, but that is a different issue.

In those cases, it isn't the job they do, but how they do their job, that's at issue.

DEA Agent is only bad if you disagree with what they do. Everything is
perception. You hate the dea, I hate hippies, Ragnar hates anything not
republiconservative.

Anyone who disrespects people who handle their food, are just idiotic.
