For the first time in my adult life I don't have to cook for Thanksgiving! Well, we're not hosting Thanksgiving but we're still cooking and bringing some food.

*sigh* perfec year for it, too. I'm tired.

a good knife can slice halfway through your finger cleanly enough to not leave a noticeable scar on someone who scars easily

I'm hosting Thanksgiving for the first time this year.  I hope my knife is up to the task.

I never made a turkey before.  I've been planning to have this dinner all year and I could have made a few dry runs wtih smaller turkeys.  Why didn't I do that?  Why did I wait till Thanksgiving to wing it?

That was punny!

Seriously, good turkey isn't very hard. Relax, you'll be fine.

ewww. butter on turkey?! gross.

Also not a big fan of rosemary here...

Family turkey secret. Take one peeled onion and one clean apple. Shove into the turkey. sprinkle granulated garlic over the whole thing. Cook covered at 350 for a bunch of hours.

A little butter will *absolutely* make the turkey more moist and succulent, even if it does increase the fat content a bit. But it's yummy. Butter is *always* yummy.

I always brine a turkey overnight before cooking it. That plus cooking by internal temperature instead of time yields a moist turkey every time.

butterballs are pre-brined.

Are they brined? I thought they were injected with a fat solution.

Dr Dan tells me they are pre-brined and clearly superior. That's why he only buys them.

He doesn't refrigerate them either.  Imagine a house full of uncooked, unrefrigerated turkeys.  Yum!!

Hey Ig, have you tried the method of a salt rub instead of brining? We tried that this year and ended up with one moist turkey.
