Just use jello powder.
If aspartame is really bad, then I'm in trouble.
You may be in trouble, then. When aspartame is digested, it breaks down into several nasty substances. There are some amounts of formaldehyde and formic acid, which are toxic in sufficient amounts. And there's also a significant amount of phenylalanine, which happens to be a neurotoxin. That's why consuming aspartame gives some people a headache: it is *literally* attacking your brain and central nervous system.
I steer clear of the stuff. When it comes to artificial sweeteners, good old saccharin is a safer bet. The best choice of all, of course, is to avoid artificial sweeteners altogether.
Glad you liked it. The Morroccan joynt across the street used to be
good too but I haven't been there in years. Reminder: Visit
Tommyburger in MacArthur park.
i'm fleeing this coast for the other one, but i'll keep those places in mind

I prefer the Aspartame for an artificial sweetener. That's what they
use in Coke Zero, which I vastly prefer to Diet Coke. IMHO Diet Coke
has a metallic aftertaste that Coke Zero does NOT have.
you got it backwards, diet coke is the one with aspartame
I'm not too sure about this one... but hey, to each their own...
IG - Can you back up what you said with a study of same posted on the web, or is this more "urban legend" ??
Pretty much what the URL says. But then, it's the Internet...
It's still kind of weird that so many people have some kind of beef with aspartame.
Regardless, I don't think the stuff tastes all the great, so I'm disinclined to use it. I'd rather use sugar for a sweetener anyway, and simply cut back on my intake.
The criticism of Aspartame is not that it "has been proved responsible for an epidemic of cancer, brain tumors, and multiple sclerosis." That assertion falls squarely into the realm of urban legend.
It does not dismiss, however, the *fact* that Aspartame, when digested, breaks down into its original components, several of which are known neurotoxins (phenylalanine, etc.)
If you let an aspertame soda sit past its expiration date and drink it, you'll experience satori.
Well, actually, you'll experience something much worse.
when it's been out too long, it tastes awful, I'll give you that.
the question is how serious is the harm?
Is it a .01% chance that it will cause a headache or a .01% that it can cause some level of brain damage?
Because I'd take a chance on a headache over a sure-thing on raising my blood sugar any day.
According to Wikipedia, the usual fatal dose of methanol is 100-125 mL. Unless there's some reason to believe that not all of the methanol produced by digesting aspartame is further digested in the usual fashion, it sounds like it wouldn't be too hard to reach a decidedly unhealthy dose.
Thanks for the info. Gives me a LOT to think about before I take my next swig of Coke Zero. I have also been using Aspartame to sweeten my morning coffee.
I guess I am just going to have to find a different sweetener instead of sugar and aspartame.
I just wish that IG had posted one or more of the links that the rest of you have. He's the one that made the statement in the first place, yet refused to back it up.
So, Thanks again for the words of warning.
