Subject: Eagles News: Donovan McNabb thinks Carson Wentz will

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 10/11/17.

Let's get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...

Donovan McNabb Has High Praise For Carson Wentz, Doug Pederson After Statement Win - PE.com
In his second year in the NFL, Donovan McNabb came second in the MVP vote and led the Eagles to an 11-win season and a trip to the Divisional Round of the playoffs. After witnessing the 2017 Eagles dismantle the Arizona Cardinals 34-7 at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday, McNabb believes that another second-year quarterback in Carson Wentz will lead the team back to the postseason. "Absolutely," McNabb said. "I think they have everything they need to make it to the playoffs. It's going to be a great year." McNabb flourished in Philadelphia leading the Eagles to five NFC Championship Game appearances and a trip to Super Bowl XXXIX. The former second overall pick thinks that Wentz, also a former No. 2 overall pick who had a career-best four touchdown passes in the win, has the mental makeup to lead this team to bigger and better things. "He's an intelligent guy. He understands his capabilities. He knows the prize and what's in front of him. He works extremely hard. He's prepared for it," McNabb said.

5 best Eagles jerseys to buy right now - BGN
Are you even an Eagles fan if you don’t own a jersey (or some sort of tee shirt)? We have a Fanatics store with a bunch of Eagles merchandise (like hoodies, shoes, hats, tailgating gear, and more) and today we want to take a look at the most essential piece to own — the jersey.

BGN Radio #268: Is This A Gut Check Game For The Eagles? - BGNRadio.com
Vince Quinn and John Barchard talk about a Panthers team that's A LOT like the Birds. Are the Panthers for real? Is this a good match up for the corners? John declares this "The Alshon Game" and Vince thinks plenty of options can win it for the Eagles. Plus NFL picks and more!

Wentz has a history of getting in 'arguments' with his coaches – and why that's a good thing - PhillyVoice
"I remember going there and [Wentz] saying that his coaches used to say he had a lot of arguments with his offensive coordinator," Reich continued. "For me, I took that as a good thing, because he knew what he wanted, he knew what was good, and we welcomed that and that's a good dynamic." Apparently, that hasn't changed too much in the year and a half since he was drafted by the Eagles. And the relationship between coach, coordinator and player – all NFL QBs at one time or another – is such that they take stock of what their quarterback has to say, because they trust he knows what he's talking about.

The Best of Carson - Iggles Blitz
Carson Wentz is going to be a hot button topic in the football world for a while. Those who didn’t like him before the draft continue to find ways to nitpick his game, seemingly changing the arguments against him on a weekly basis. Eagles fans don’t help matters, telling his critics about every TD throw or big play as soon as they happen. Those in the middle who are trying to honestly evaluate the young QB can’t decide what to say. There is no question that Wentz is very talented and he has some great moments, but he still has moments where he reminds you that he’s a young QB and has a long way to go. It is too soon to say that’s he has definitely taken the next step and is now a consistently good QB. You need 10 or so games to make a call like that.

All-22: On Carson Wentz, Jason Peters and third-down brilliance - The Athletic
The Eagles went into Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals with a clear understanding of what their opponent liked to do defensively. “We knew coming into that game it was going to be tough to run the ball,” Jason Kelce said after the team's 34-7 win. “They stacked the box, ran a lot of Cover 1. We did decent, could have had a better ground game. But if they can beat man to man coverage on the outside, it just makes everything run better.” The Eagles scored touchdowns on their first three possessions and produced points on six of 10 possessions on the day. Through five weeks, the team is averaging 27.4 points per game, tied for sixth-most in the NFL. On Sunday, it was a combination of their offensive line dominating, remarkable third-down efficiency and Carson Wentz's continued growth that led them to a victory.

Film Breakdown: The maturation of Carson Wentz and Eagles' offensive diversity - Inquirer
Each week this season, we’ll have an oral history of a play, trend or scheme from the Eagles’ previous game using the coaches all-22 film. This week, we spotlight the Eagles’ diverse offense and the growing maturation of Carson Wentz and how both played a role in the 34-7 pasting of the Cardinals on Sunday.

Eagles' Malcolm Jenkins doesn't think anthem mandate a good idea - ESPN
Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins said that players around the league will continue in their efforts to raise awareness about social injustice regardless of how the NFL decides to address demonstrations during the national anthem. "I think we've seen even over the last year that you can take a player out of the league, you can threaten to do whatever you want to do, that's not going to deter players from doing what's right, or doing what they believe is right," Jenkins said Tuesday. "You might be able to change the manner in which that looks but I don't see players stopping their pursuit for justice or equality."

TABLE TALK: Eagles, Eagles, Eagles! - Philadelphia Sports Table
This week on TABLE TALK, Brandon Lee Gowton (@BrandonGowton) from BleedingGreenNation.com and the BGN Radio podcast joined Jeff for a look at what’s been happening with this Eagles team on offense and defense. They get into specific players this week. Of course, a discussion about Carson Wentz’s development from the quarterback he was in 2016 to his growth here in 2017. The guys also got into a couple of the wide receivers on this team – Nelson Agholor and his storyline season as well as Alshon Jeffery and questions about his No. 1 receiver status. Moving to the defense, the guys talked about Tim Jernigan’s and Patrick Robinson’s future on the team and how this cornerback crew, while depleted due to injury, is playing good football without accumulating penalties. All of this and much more this week on TABLE TALK. If you’re a huge Eagles fan, this is definitely a show and interview you won’t want to miss!

Panthers vs Eagles: Scouting the Philadelphia Eagles - Cat Scratch Reader
The Panthers offensive line looked better on Sunday against the Lions on Sunday, the Eagles come in with one of the best defensive lines in football, accumulating 12 sacks and forcing teams to completely re-adjust their game plans. Four of those sacks have come in the last two games with the Eagles best defensive lineman, Fletcher Cox, on the sideline with a calf injury. It’s unclear if Cox will suit up Thursday night, but even if he doesn't the edge rotation of Vinny Curry, Brandon Graham, Derek Barnett and Chris Long has allowed the Eagles to keep their defensive line fresh. Having Ryan Kalil healthy for this game would be a big boost, especially if Cox plays.

Panthers’ CB: Eagles WR Alshon Jeffery has come a long way since Gamecock days - Charlotte Observer
Carolina Panthers cornerback Captain Munnerlyn thinks the Eagles’ Alshon Jeffery is among the best receivers in the NFL. But Munnerlyn hasn’t always had a high opinion of his fellow Gamecock. Munnerlyn was a Panthers’ rookie in 2009 when Jeffery was a freshman at South Carolina. Munnerlyn spent a lot of time in Columbia that season, and says Jeffery has come a long way. “He’s one of the best. He’s definitely a whole lot better than he was in college, and I tell him that every time,” Munnerlyn said Tuesday. “I look at him and I was like, ‘Bro, man you run better routes. You’re faster.’ I think he just started taking it very serious.”

Week 5 DVOA Ratings - Football Outsiders
With the exception of the Chiefs and perhaps the Eagles, the biggest difference between this year's one-loss and two-loss teams is primarily close wins. That's a big reason why four different one-loss teams are surprisingly low in DVOA: Green Bay at No. 11, Atlanta at No. 13, Denver at No. 16, and Carolina at No. 17. Carolina is another team with close wins: two by a field goal and another over Buffalo by less than a touchdown. Those games and the big win over lousy San Francisco all have positive DVOA ratings, but the Week 3 game where the Panthers were clobbered by the Saints, 34-13, has a lousy -66.7% DVOA that balances out most of that positive performance in the other four weeks. Not all the positive performance, but the Panthers end up ranked in the lower half of the league because of the thing we noted last week where the horror of the eight worst teams have moved "league average" so that more teams are above zero DVOA than below zero. (Last week it was 20 teams above zero; this week is only 18 as Tampa Bay and Tennessee both dip a bit below.)

2017 PFFELO NFL Power Rankings - Week 6 - PFF
As we predicted, the Eagles handled business convincingly against the Cardinals on Sunday at home. Carson Wentz utilized play action to the tune of 7-for-7 passing, for 56 yards and a touchdown against Arizona’s defense. Clearly they leveraged a running game that is averaging 4.5 yards per carry and has gone over 100 yards in five consecutive games. They’ll be hurt if Lane Johnson (86.2) can’t go on Thursday because of a concussion, but it looks like they’ll be getting Fletcher Cox (calf) back in time to face a Carolina offensive line that’s middle-of-the-road in terms of pass-blocking efficiency and run-blocking grades so far this season.

Prohibiting protests is all about maintaining control for Jerry Jones - SB Nation
It was only a matter of time before Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said what he said on Sunday: That if anyone on his team “disrespects the flag, then we will not play.” Jones’ declaration (which I will be surprised if more NFL owners don’t also eventually make) was bound to happen. It was inevitable that least one of these head honchos would soon have had enough of players protesting police brutality against minorities by kneeling or raising a fist while the national anthem plays before games. And it was not shocking that Jones was the first to do so.
