Subject: Cameras

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

When I was in High School a bit over forty years ago, I started playing with photography. I had an old 120 size camera, and I built an enlarger from an old 4 X 5 press type camera that my dad brought back from Germany in WWII. I did more of this my freshman year in college, but later lost access to a darkroom.

I started playing with picture processing again in 1999 when I got this computer and added a scanner. I was able to restore a couple of snap shots from WWII, and was re bitten by the bug.

A year later I bought my first digital camera, a Kodak DC-215, one megapixel unit with a 2X zoom lens. The picture count on that camera is now over 2000. I have a few good pictures, and many so/so or not-so-good. The advantage is I take lots of pictures, as once I had the camera, I did not need to buy film or processing.

My new camera, that I am just learning to use is a five megapixel Olympus with a 3X optical zoom plus a 4X digital zoom. Digital zoom seems a waste of time to me, however. All it does is crop the picture, giving a lower resolution. I can do that on the computer from a full image, and prehaps change the cropping for a better composure.

Is anyone else interested in digital photography? I am hoping to learn more about it, and swap stories and pictures. The exact means of swapping pictures, needs to be worked out. Rather than using a whale of a lot of disk space on the server, perhaps we can get a spot or a remail list for thumbnails, and exchange full resolution pictures by e-mail when requested.

Harry

Here is one of my favorite shots I've ever taken on the digital. :)
Foggy day in Chicago, taken from the Adler Planetarium steps...

I love them both, the second one is very striking though.

Were those in Vacaville taken near the fairgrounds/Marineland?

When your lens flares, use it artistically!

Ladyhawke, it's a painting that was on display at an outdoor festival. The butterfly just happened to come by and settle on it. Here's one that shows more of the painting:
