So you really think ISCABBS is on its way out?

I've thought so for a long time. The basic problem with ISCABBS right now is the people running it are mostly interested in keeping things as they are.
In the meantime, the world is changing around them. It used to be that ISCABBS would follow changes; it was a very dynamic environment. It's grown stagnant, and right now it's slowly bleeding to death through user attrition.

Ok, so you're talking about a cultural stagnation. I would imagine it's suffering from technological stagnation also. After the source code to DOC (i.e. Citadel/UX v3.20 + local hacks) showed up, it seems that they decided to permanently pass up both the current Citadel/UX *and* Gestalt, opting instead to stick with their outdated code forever.

That means they'll probably never have a web interface, which means most new users are going to completely pass them by. A quick glance around the web site shows that they've made a few quick and easy hacks (wholist, read a user's bio, etc) but the rest of the system is really behind the times.

Quartz has the same problem.

Heh, I made all those quick and easy hacks. As for a REAL web interface, I doubt DOC will ever have one, essentially because the whole thing will have to be rewritten. It may have been based on an old version of Citadel, but they've added a LOT of customized code, and much of it is pure spaghetti, since it was written to be heavily optimized for a tiny (by today's standards) HP/SUX box, which they're still using.

They've got plenty of spare boxes, should that one break down...
though last I heard, they were talking about sending them to surplus.
My guess is they'll do that a week before the machine blows up... <GRIN>

Well, you might want to have "ISCA 2" ready for when that happens. :)

Please move the offtopic discussions to the proper room and get back to planning the user meeting. The rental fee's on this flamethrower are starting to get painful.

WOW, long time since I've actually been on a Citadel. I don't remember when I actually took The Amiga Annals offline, but I know that I sold my last Amiga back in 1998 when I finally made the jump to the PC.

This web interface is kind of strange to me... maybe I'll try the telnet like I've seen others mention...

Anyhow, just wanted to say hello to everyone. I recognize some names from the past.

Kernel,
It's always good to see old Citadelians come back. Wipe off your feet and stick around a while. :)

Kernel:

the text interface is still available. You can use SSH or Telnet to access uncensored.citadel.org.

My brain is hurting. I could've sworn it was .EN (.Enter Netmessage), but maybe I'm not cleared for that as a "new user".

Citadel! Cripes, do I feel old.

I gotta see if I can figure some way to vector com port I/O from my old door games so they can be accessed via Telnet or somesuch. WOA, LORD, TradeWars, etc on the internet is glorious text! That'll have those Everquest weenies quaking in their boots!

Good to see lots of familiar names, even if they are attached to some old posts. Regards all!
