nocturn, i've committed the patch. it should compile now. please give it a try.

Citserver no longer starts up, from the log:
May 24 18:59:20 shadow citadel: Loading citadel.config

Then the process disappears...

Starting from the command line:

You are running libcitadel version 1.09
citserver was compiled against version 1.13

I did recompile libcitadel too... it installed without error.

this sounds as if you've got an older libcitadel installed than you've compiled

Strange, I used easyinstall before... never used the debs.
Maybe I messed up my prefix for libcitadel. It should be /usr/local/citadel?

Subject: [Bug 384] New: Imap fails when mail message contains no subject header

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

http://bugzilla.citadel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=384

Summary: Imap fails when mail message contains no subject header
Product: Citadel
Version: current version
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P1
Component: IMAP
AssignedTo: room_citadel_bug_tracking@uncensored.citadel.org
ReportedBy: rob@ros.com.au

It appears that email messages being transferred to citadel via imap fail if
there is no "subject" header in the message - response using imapsync:

parse_headers want an ARRAY ref
Couldn't append msg #185800 (Subject:[0]) to folder
INBOX/mail-systems/citadel/newprob: 12 NO Invalid mailbox name or location, or
access denied

While I'm sure this violates the rfc, there is at least one popular email
client that does this (incredimail in this case) - I also believe that this
could also cause prob's with webcit (lockup?)

Testing has shown that most other imap servers tolerate this missing header.

------- Comment #1 from rob@ros.com.au 2008-05-25 08:06 -------
Further searching for abnormalities in these problem messages reveals another
oddity which I am not sure is related to this problem.

The "received" header on these messages appears as such:

Received: from my.mailserver.com.au (LHLO my.mailserver.com.au) (x.x.x.x) by
my.mailserver.com.au with LMTP; Thu, 3 Apr 2008 19:47:22 +1100 (EST)

For some reason their is a <cr> *after* "by", so the 2nd line of the received
header starts with "my.mailserver.com.au with LMTP;" instead of "by
my.mailserver.com.au with LMTP;"

Could this be causing prob's with the header parser?

usually this is "one line", since lines with leading blanks are counted to be
wrapped arround. So the evaluator has to "unfold" them.
Interesting comment with that subject, i'll have a look at it.

I decided to wipe & resync my entire mail spool using the latest cvs of cit, &
have turned up another 3 "problem" emails thus far (It'll take a couple of days
to resync all the mail - 500k of messages via imap is slow ;) - Now, they all
have a similar unusual "Received" as per my previous comment, however, 2 of
them *do* have what appears to be a pretty normal subject lines, but get the
same (Subject:[0]) error from imapsync?

i've used
http://www.athensfbc.com/imap_tools/files/MboxtoIMAP.pl
to try to reproduce this. There also is a imaptombox program, which you might
use to try to extract test messages.
Maybe we then can attach sample messages to this bug, so we can track it down.
I'll attach the mbox file i used to test this.

Problematic mbox

OK, Attached is a problematic mbox which fails consistantly. Unfortunately, any
attempt on my part to "anonymise" the contents of the message results in it not
failing.

The strange thing is, most of the problematic messages that cause this failure
no longer fail once I copy/move them (I have about 100 messages from the squid
mailing list, which all appeared fine once moved). It seems these "incredimail"
messages are the only ones that preserve the problem when moved/copied ;) (I
have a few of them, but the others have large attachments - this one is the
smallest ;)

When an IMAP client causes the creation of a new room / folder it does not
cause an Aide room message to inform about the creation.

It probably doesn't do it for deletion either.

------- Comment #9 from rob@ros.com.au 2008-05-27 16:59 -------
Actually, I interpreted the problem as being that the imap server, instead of
sending a "2 OK" response when receipt of the message is complete, is just
sending a "1 LOGOUT" - I renamed the folder:

05-28-2008.06:40:25 Copying mbx INBOX/mail-systems-citadel-newprob3
05-28-2008.06:40:25 There are 1 messages in mail-systems-citadel-newprob3
05-28-2008.06:40:25 Copying message number 1
05-28-2008.06:40:25 >> 1 CREATE "INBOX/mail-systems-citadel-newprob3"
05-28-2008.06:40:26 << 1 OK CREATE completed
05-28-2008.06:40:26 >> 2 APPEND "INBOX/mail-systems-citadel-newprob3" {13385}
05-28-2008.06:40:26 << + Transmit message now.
05-28-2008.06:40:26 <<
05-28-2008.06:40:26 unexpected APPEND response:
05-28-2008.06:40:26 >> 1 LOGOUT
05-28-2008.06:40:26 <<
05-28-2008.06:40:26 unexpected LOGOUT response:
05-28-2008.06:40:26

Now, a working message spits out something like this:

05-28-2008.06:40:23 Copying mbx INBOX/mail-systems-citadel-newprob
05-28-2008.06:40:23 There are 2 messages in mail-systems-citadel-newprob
05-28-2008.06:40:23 Copying message number 1
05-28-2008.06:40:23 >> 1 CREATE "INBOX/mail-systems-citadel-newprob"
05-28-2008.06:40:23 << 1 NO Mailbox already exists, or create failed
05-28-2008.06:40:23 >> 2 APPEND "INBOX/mail-systems-citadel-newprob" {2183}
05-28-2008.06:40:23 << + Transmit message now.
05-28-2008.06:40:24 << 2 OK [APPENDUID 1 333455] APPEND completed

Now, in both cases the message *does* arrive in the mailbox, however, as it
never sees a response saying the message has being accepted (2 OK), the imap
client hangs/fails.

Now, feeding this same message via smtp doesn't get this error, nor does
copying this message to any other imap server.

I have been seeing an abnormality on received email into citadel, whereby part
of the message body "disappears".

While the problem hasn't occurred on pure text messages, it seems to be very
intermittant, & not replicable (ie. I can manually re-feed a "clean" copy of
the original message, & it appears flawlessly ;)

I have noticed this with messages from the cit mail list as well as normal
everyday mail
