That happens with mine, too, and it's not too old. I just open/close and it usually reads the CD the second time.

did you try smacking it? mine did that when the disc was misaligned. of course after fixing the mechanical problem, it's been at a repair place for an electrical problem since the end of july.

i don't get it. i narrowed it down to one of 2 chips (that are on the same board) and also thought they should check one of the transformers by the power supply (but the problem with that output being dragged down only happend when the board with the bad chip(s) was connected, and those chips were directly connected so i can see how they might have been loading it funny).

so apparently all they do is change parts, they don't even fix them. i'm quite certain i could have fixed it by now... i don't know what the deal with the repair place is...

I did try smacking it from the top...I might try from the side.

I put a cleaning DVD in it, and got to watch a movie...then, I tried to put in another, and told me "no disc" again.

I've got the cleaning disc in, again, and am actually into the actual program (cleaning)...but it seems to have hung on the first image/stage.

that sounds a bit odd.

I'm fairly sure I'm going to either have to send it to the mfr (for warranty coverage) or replace it. It wasn't expensive...an Apex 1100 that my wife got at Walmart for me...but she bought it in the middle of July, and it's only actually been out of the box since the very end of July.

is there a local place that can do the warranty repair?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Nah...the warranty is 1 year on parts, 90 days on labor. And they didn't give me any options for going local...just sending it in.

Not without looking at it, I'm sure. S'ok...the cleaning disc seems to have done the trick...my wife and I watched a bunch of DVDs while she was here, last weekend, and we had not even a burp from the player.

well then hopefully it's feeling better.

re my dvd player... the plot thickens. i came home to find one of those delivery attempt notices from ups on my door on wednesday night. so i called to have them hold the package so i could pick it up from the ups place and since it was late i had to wait until this morning to pick up the mystery package.

it was something in a dvd player box, shipped to me from some place in torrance. there was some packing slip on the front that had the word "warranty" on it and my address was misspelled in the same manner as the receptionist at the repair place in camarillo (where i dropped it off in july) spelled it.

so i checked on harmon kardon's website, and some time between july and now this place in torrance (where the box was shipped from) became the only authorized repair place for the model i had... so it would appear that my dvd player is back.

of course it's been in the trunk of my car all day so i won't get to see iof it actually works until later tonight...

I was wondering if anyone could reccomend a good console CD
burner for my stereo? I thought i read somewhere, that the
lower end brands, (like the ones at best buy, etc) had some
sort of copy protection in them were you could only copy
certain disc once, and then it wouldn't let you copy that
disc anymore.. Doesn't like the more proffesiional/studio
ones by pass this? I think these might be in the $400-500
dollar range? I wanna be able to record lp's to cd and i've
tried to do that through my s/b 64, and it sucks eggs of course!
So, i just wanna go with a nice console model..

thanks.peace.zaphod.

Zaphod, you may be better off getting a good A/D cconverter interface. That way you can get quality audio into your computer and do some nifty stuff to it, like noise/pop & cclick reduction and setting track markers so you get tracks on your CD rather than one giant multi-song track per side of the LP.

For the same or less money, you can get a quality converter and computer CD burner. If you already have a CD burner, so much the better!

Anyone seen the Audiotron? Kinda cool. Of course I'd rather have a little
X-10 remote, but it's still cool.
