hmm... I'd reccomend the factory stereo upgrade in the VW's nowadays, for factory it's not bad, and the seats are really comfortable.
The problem is more a matter of being able to turn up the volume enough to drown out the wind noise.

:-)

I'm part of the A/V group for an improv comedy troupe. We currently have a 5-channel mixer stretched to its breaking point (multiple devices on a channel, etc.) I'd like to move up to a 9-12 channel mixer, but money IS an option. Does anyone have any pointers as to where I could look for a cheap used mixer?

It depends upon what your needs are, in two ways: 1) how many inputs do you want for mics, and how many for stereo sources (CD, tapes)? 2) What level of quality or features are you looking for? Cheap-ass mixer: Behringer.. NOT RECOMMENDED but they do work.. Much better quality look at Yamaha, they make some boards in that range that aren't too complicated so if you are unskilled but want good quality they're a good bet.. Mackie.. for example the Mackie 1642 VLZ Pro.. you can't lose with it.. it has all the features and inputs you are likely to want, sounds good, and is well constructed, great deal for the money. If you want something fancier still take a look at the Soundcraft Spirit M Series. That brings you somewhat into the pro world.. lot of pros sneer on the Spirit (those same pros diss Mackie and piss on Behringer) but I've put a bunch of time on Spirit boards and like them. Somewhere in there either just above or just below the Mackie in quality (depending on who you ask) is the Allen & Heath Mix Wizard.. It has lots of features and doesn't suck.. some say it's much better than the Mackie.. I don't agree. But anyway, I'd suggest figuring out the inputs and outputs situation first, and how much you can spend.. then you can dig in on the details.

oh, I didn't realize you asked what not where.

Actually, he did ask where. I read it as what. But still, there are dozens of mixers on ebay to choose from at any given moment. Better to decide what you want first, then shop for it.

My lovely wife picked up at an auction a Marconi Model 270, it's an old-style full cabinet radio with the authentic papers and "radio license" in the back!
Now, I've been hunting for information on this thing on the internet, to no luck..if anyone can find anything on it, it would be much appreciated!

I don't even think they had TV when the Marconi was produced.

I recently got sound working on my linux box (SuSE 7.1) and it
was working perfectly for a couple of days, however, now NO
sound will come out of the right channel. I've tried ALL mixer
settings. I thought i just might of blown my pc speaker, but then
i hooked it up to my stereo and it does the same thing. No right
channel. Any ideas how to fix or what might have caused this?

peace.zaphod.

Never heard of that happening before. I'd lean towards a hardware problem, possibly a loose connector somewhere.

As it is, I can't even get sound to work on my Debian box.. Been working on that.. but Have you checked to make sure there isn't a short, or that the contacts are all good on teh speakers?

zaphod, sounds like a hardware problem - i had a problem like that on my laptop (which meant i had to get the cd-rom drive replaced). i'd check the connector (and what it connects to) for opens/shorts.

Are there good dv systems that mesh with linux, anyone know? or should I bite the bullet and buy a Mac?

If you want to actually use it, not tinker with it for a DV project, I would go with a Mac. Macs and DV are *so* sweet together.

Or, Laird Telemedia has some really sweet and affordable PC-based stuff:

I want adobe premier for linux! Then I could get off of the damn windows platform.
I'd get a mac, but can't afford one at the moment.

Check out MainConcept's MainActor for Linux:

http://www.mainconcept.com/products.shtml

Between that and http://www.openquicktime.org/ (QT implementation for Linux)
you should have a lot of bases covered.

I seem to recall MainActor for OS/2. I wonder if it's the same product.

I'm at a minor loss. My DVD player can read audio CDs just fine, but for the last 2 days, has been telling me "no disc" when I insert a DVD for playback.

I'm hoping it's just something dirty, and that a cleaning disc can/will fix the problem. The thing was only bought in mid/late July, though, and I've only played something like 50 DVDs on it.
